I’m in the early stages of researching donating a kidney. Among all the questions I will have. How will this affect my medical? I’m currently flying under basic med. BM probably makes it less of an issue. Does anyone have any input or experience in this matter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a piece of me surgically removed. I was otherwise healthy. I self-grounded due to the anesthesia used, but that clock expired long before I felt ready to go to the hangar and pull my plane out with the towbar.

There's no FAA reg specifying that you have to have two kidneys to go fly. Once you've recovered and have cleared any disqualifying drugs out of your system per FAA guidance, you should be good to go.

Had my appendix removed. Reported when I got my medical. Glossed right over it. Recovery took a few weeks to be able to sit in one spot for any length of time comfortably.

I can't answer your question, but let me commend you for considering making such a donation.

I do thank you @Brad schneider for your consideration about this as I have a family member that has been the recipient of organ donations. As you likely have already learned there are kidney donations from living donors (like yourself if you go through with this) and from deceased donors (accident victims etc.) and the living donor kidneys are far better in regards to longevity to the recipient and are the most desirable.

BTW ... many may not know but in most cases of organ donation the failed organ is not removed when the replacement organ is transplanted.

I did not know that the old organ may stay intact. Interesting. I’ll update if we decide to move forward. Thanks for all the inputs.
