I am flying an angel flight tomorrow from KUNV to Islip ,NY. I do no fly this route that often. Question For guys familiar with the area : any particular way to file a flight plan so I have a good chance to get cleared as filed response?

believe it or not file direct and use the angel flight id as well as noting it in the remarks . you will get vectored around a few times for some big stuff. try 9000 those guys are good and you will be working ny real soon

BREZY V39 CMK V374 DENNA BDR CCC is the routing for NY satellite airports to ISP (according to the TEC routes in the chart supplement). That matches my experience, too. I would start with that as a reasonable thing to file (just find a reasonable way to get to BREZY).

I wouldn't sweat it too much....file a plan, then check to see the expected routing 2 hours prior to your departure time. That should be ample time to prepare for the route. Then, of course, be prepared for vectors once you get into NY tracon. Being AF might buy you some favors, too.

NY will worked you up to just south of the NYC area (coming from south), then either vector or turn you east along the shore line of Long Island right into Islip. Usually.

I will give it a try. Always like direct. I will be taking off VFR so plenty of time to write down amended clearances. I guess I will let them figure it out.

+1 for the TEC route. You'll get them almost all the time.

Just file on FltPlan.com and check your expected route before hopping in the plane. You're almost sure to get that in your clearance. Plenty of time to get accustomed to the route. It's sometimes hard to predict in advance what you'll get as it can literally change as the wind blows but TEC route is your best bet if you want to get what you file.

The flight is cancelled. Patient's doctor told him not to come this week. May be next week. Thanks for you help though

For your next trip ... I come in from the western Phila suburbs and with my steam gauges am often routed thru RBV or CYN to DIXIE then V1 for a short bit then vectors on in to ISP (routing usually involves CCC but they've only sent me there once). Revectoring is a given inbound approaching JFK but sometimes they will fly you right over it. I'm usually at 4000-6000 in a PA28. (For some reason the outbound return trip is less hectic.) The controllers are often very busy (often an understatement) particularly on NY Approach into ISP, 120.05, but they are very professional. Again for steam gauges, be aware of the Canarsie VOR for navigation in case it comes up.

Would you please explain what steam gauges has to do with anything as far as routing ? Are you using steam gauges as a way of saying no gps ?

Yes, VOR, DME and ILS equipped only (/A). Generally long range direct and IFR T routes are not available to me. I do have a VFR GPS but that is only good for situational awareness for IFR navigation. Sorry for the cryptology.

BTW, I've heard that the callup for KISP is "Long Island Tower", not "MacArthur" or "Islip.

There's one guy who's really anal about calling Republic Tower "Republic Tower" and not "Farmingdale Tower." For the most par, the controllers are pretty good. They do sometimes get frustrated due to the amount of student and jet traffic.

I flew my AF paxs to ISP today. It was a CACU day and I flew VFR above class B both ways. Controllers were extraordinarily helpful and professional. Easy flights with great view of NYC.
I am going again tomorrow to ISP to pick them up and bring them back home to KUNV. Trouble is there is VIP TFR tomorrow starting around the same time as I would be going there. Coming back with the angel flight call sign should be easier but getting to ISP I am concerned. TFR covers a wide area along my route. Any ideas ?

As long as your IFR it shouldn't be an issue. I've flown out of FRG a bunch of times during the TFRs and I didn't have any problems.

Had him on Rowe this morning. In addition to being a prick in general he yelled at someone for calling in Farmingdale. He's a loser.

Thanks . That's what the controllers advised me to do near my home field. I will file an IFR plan mentioned earlier by coma24 and hope it sticks

Rowe?

The correct call ups are "Long Island Approach" and "MacArthur Tower"

It is Republic Airport located in East Farmingdale. Those call signs are like calling Kennedy Tower, Queens Tower or New York City Tower. That might grate on my ears after awhile too. Let's get it right -- tho he shouldn't be rude about it.

It's not something to freak out about. There's plenty of other things he should be looking out for.

It's the only airport where I heard another pilot basically having road, er, air rage on the radio. They went off on the controller because they though a plane took off before them out of sequence not realizing it had already been holding short for an intersection departure (me). He was clogging the air going off on the controller. I switched to departure before I heard it all but I sure hope he and his Long Island accent got a "call the tower".

I think FRG controllers are very good actually considering the **** they have to deal with. I did a tower tour a few months ago and saw the sexy voiced female controller in person. She's way hotter than I imagined.:)
