I put my iphone by my bed, whether at home or at a hotel. When I want to know what time it is, I reach over and stab the home button and the lock screen lights up for a few seconds showing the time.

Can I still easily get the time in the dark without picking up the Iphone x?

You can turn on the tap-to-wake feature that lets you tap the screen and have it momentarily turn on with the lock screen.

As an aside, I’m going to wait at least a couple months before replacing my 6+.

Eager to see the 8+ and the X side-by-side in an Apple Store. Maybe visit the one in Knoxville if it’s not too crazy.

I pre-ordered the X last week. Didn't want to spend the money but I need more memory and my iphone 6 has been good to me. I got the max memory X. What really sold me was the big screen on the regular size phone.

I'm starting to regret buying a 16gb 6. I've had to whittle my phone down to one page of apps just to keep the phone somewhat running.

It amazes me that I can delete a 300mb app and only gain 2mb of memory. Where the HECK did the other 298mb go?????

I’m still happy with my six + ,not ready to part with the amount of money, they want for the ten.

I’m waiting for the iPhone Y.

But they call the next model iPhone XX, I’ll just wait for XXX.

That's the price you pay to have the inconvience of owning an apple phone. I have 500 GB of space in my phone with expandable memory. Fast SD cards made it even better.

I made it into the Apple Store in Knoxville yesterday.

When I’m ready to replace my aging 6+, I’m pretty sure now it will be with the X.

Hard to explain, but holding it and playing with it feels like the future. The 8+ is fine, but is more of an incremental update - you have to look closely to differentiate the 6’s from the 6s’s from the 7’s from the 8’s. They all are still wonderful devices but now seem like they’re rooted in the past.

Quick observations:

1) The “notch” is a very minor concession and not a big deal.

2) There would be a learning curve to adapt to the lack of a home button. To wit, new and non-intuitive combinations of the “power” button along with up and down volume buttons to turn off the phone, force a restart, take a screenshot, that sort of thing. Probably take a few days to a week to fully “internalize” the new gestures.

3) A screen the size of an 8+ in the form factor of an 8 is nice - while I appreciate the screen real estate on my 6+, it is an awfully gargantuan size. Even slightly smaller will be appreciated.

4) The X is glass on the back. Apple brags about how strong it is, but there are already tests and real-life droppings revealing how fragile they really are:

OUCH! In my world, a substantial case would be de facto mandatory, robbing a lot of the elegance of the new design, which feels wonderful in the hand. I wish Apple would market a “Sport” edition, like Sony did with the Walkman, for clumsy people like me. But Otterboxes and the like serve that function, albeit in a rather clunky style.

5) For laughs, I picked up an SE, which has the original 4” screen. It felt delightfully small and “right” as a phone. I would never give up the screen size I’ve become accustomed to, but it is a nice little device in its own right.

Anyway, the tentative plan is to soldier on with my 6+ for awhile and let the new phones sort themselves out. But in a few months I do see myself with an iPhone X.

These damned things are like $1000 eggs coated with Teflon. Stupid design choices looks good in a magazine ad but you have to encase it in a rugged case- at additional cost (thereby destroying the "aesthetic")- to keep it from shattering when it's eventually dropped.

Agreed. But adding an Otterbox Defender case takes it to where an iPhone Sport might have been anyway.

But I look forward to virtually indestructible phones in the future.

So I have a 6S as my work phone and upgraded my personal phone from the 6 Plus to the X; I can say that it took less than a day of use to get acclimated to the lack of home button, and the setup is so intuitive that I actually get messed up when I go to use my work phone. Between the Face ID and no home button I have to say I genuinely love the X.

You need professional help!

But then again, I'm going to be ordering an x soon too, at my wife's request. She is still using an iPhone 4 and she wants my 6s.

I live on both of my phones and laptop for work, it's a really good phone and I needed the upgrade no matter what. My 6 Plus was on life support, if I opened more than two applications at the same time it was freezing and then restarting, horrible lag etc.

As an aside, my 6+ is working fine, though battery life is getting progressively worse.

You're lucky, one of the worst issues I had was I'd drop from 60% battery down to 9% then dead in a matter of minutes.

I bought atwo 64GB microSD cards when I got my Galaxy 8+. The screen js the size of an iphone 8, the SD cards are easily replaceable, it's 20% less to buy than the X, and Costco gave me a $200 card when i bought it.

Why do so many people pay more to be inconvenienced by apple??? :confused2:

I use a note 8 and after seeing the iPhoneX In person I feel like the X is too small and is a clone of the S7 I used to own. I don't think there is a single thing that I would like from the iPhone X to be implemented in the Samsung line. But iPhone keeps implementing other's tech to the IPhone.

Well, I bit the bullet, and ordered an iPhone X...

...case!

Went with an Otterbox Defender series again. “Big Sur” color combo. Bulky, but I can be a bit rough on phones.

Probably pull the trigger on the phone soon. About $48/month for 2 years for the 128gb model, plus Gazelle says my 6+ is worth $140, though last couple of times eBay has gotten me more than the Gazelle offer.

I think the form factor of the X is the future, leaving the 8 and 8+ seeming a bit stuck in the past.

I’ll check back in once the order is placed - Apple is estimating 2-3 week’s deliver time at the moment.

Lots of reasons. The iPhone is reasonably secure. The vast majority of android devices are a joke with security.

The iPhone receives regular security patches...for YEARS. Not the case with most Androids. You’re lucky if you ever get a patch even once on most of them.

I also make my living by spending 10+ hours per day on my MacBook Pro. It integrates with iOS way the hell better than android and provides a seamless experience that boosts my productivity.

The iPhone can also run ForeFlight. Android cannot. If I am having a bad time in an airplane and needing aviation data fast I want foreflight because it’s what I know best.

The cost difference is negligible for the extra value received in my case.

Got my Otterbox.

I think this comparison is interesting:

On the left, my 6+ in its well worn Otterbox.

On the right, the Otterbox for the iPhone X.

Noticeably more compact for the same screen real estate.

My prediction is the prior form factor will rapidly seem quite dated, with all that wasted space, top and bottom.

I'm an Android user. My first iPhone was the 4S and went to the Galaxy S3 when the iPhone 5 came out because I wanted a bigger screen and never looked back. I love the Android software. I've ordered the X now though because I use ForeFlight and I want the software on my phone and they don't make it for Android. Other than that I would have already bought a Galaxy Note 8.

Apple is definitely behind in the technology now. And when they do finally add something Android has had for years they always say they've now 'made it worthy' of the iPhone. It's really annoying.

I assume you mean contacts and calendar, because iTunes is a steaming pile of crap and has been for a long time. Now they’ve removed the most useful feature, local encrypted backups.

The way to fix the integration problem is to move to google mail. I’ve been running the google apps on iPhone now for so long I don’t even keep iOS Mail or Contacts on the screen.

And that will lead to no integration problems with an Android device along with it. Switch back and forth with ease.

The only loss of productivity for me was the first week or so getting used to the gmail interface on the desktop. Once I did that and realized the Gmail search bar is way more powerful than Apple’s various searches, once you learn that new “command line”, I doubt I’d go back to Apple Mail.

My only real peeve with Google right now is if you bring your own domain, AKA GSuite, you’re locked out of certain consumer products. (Google family music for example.) The stupid fix is to have both your GSuite account for everything else but purchases (even apps if you’re on Android) and a free GMail account for purchases. They need to fix that and fix it like yesterday. You definitely don’t want your purchases linked to a GSuite account.

But that’s no worse than all the games I’ve played with multiple Apple IDs over the years for various reasons at Apple, really. (Like having an AppleID for purchases and then magically getting a second one from MobileMe back in the day. I still have to have Family Sharing turned on to listen to some of my really old Apple purchased DRM-laden music bought back then.)

Just annoying that Google fell into the same stupid trap. If they’d all allow account merging that crap would all cease to be a problem. It should be possible for both “me’s” to be one “me” in 2017. But they all seem to have no idea how to do it.

With the company on GSuite and my own vanity domains on GSuite, my “integration” needs for Apple devices fell off a cliff. Don’t need it anymore. The Google stuff works cross-platform and is faster than Apple’s stuff for the most part.

Definitely still on the fence about facial recognition and lack of a home button. Not sure whether I am ready to make this move. What about unlocking the phone without picking it up (if its on your desk at work)? How would facial ID work?

I think this thread has probably talked me into an Iphone X. But then I am probably at least a year out before I upgrade. So I will likely either get a used Iphone X off of Gazelle, or maybe new Iphone Xs as they release the next minor upgrade.
I upgraded from my 4 to 6 when the 6 was released. I am still using the 16 gig 6, but I did put a new battery in it about a year ago. But I generally only use the phone for Talking, Messaging, Calendar/Appointments, Navigation (car, sometimes aircraft), and GPS recording (Cloud Ahoy)

I went with Apple mostly because of the security features when I got my teenage son his phone. I haven't seen any real reason to change, but ITunes sometimes makes me think about it.

My son moved out about 2 years ago and upgraded to a Samsung S7, When he ran over it, he went back to Iphone 7+

I do use a Nexus 7 for my Glide Computer in my Glider (Tophat), and it works fine for that, would probably be fine for a phone also for me, but Apple hasn't annoyed me bad enough to change yet.

Pulled the trigger today.

iPhone X, 257gb in silver at the AT&T store. About $80 in GA sales tax up front, about $49/mo for 2 years.

Predicting 2 to 3 weeks delivery. Will give a pirep when it arrives.

Put the gun to your own head before you pulled it? LOL. $1256. For a phone.

I think y’all just paid more for a cell phone than my first car cost. Haha.

Yeah but just think about how much your first car would cost today. ;)

Not sure why some have an apparent need to disparage the choices of others.

And I certainly do not need to justify my decision to you or anyone.

But I would like to frame it a little.

Yes, over $1,000 for just a phone would seem excessive, especially since one can get a basic phone essentially for free with a contract.

But the way I see it, I also just ordered the best compact digital still camera I’ve ever owned. Plus the best video camera I’ve ever owned. Plus a fully featured car navigator, far better than my last Garmin Nuvi. Plus an EFB competent enough to serve as primary for VFR navigation, and eliminating the need for costly paper charts. Not to mention a web navigator. And so much more.

Of course, there are cheaper phones that do many of those same tasks. But this is one area where I don’t like to scrimp. I keep phones 2 to 3 years on average, and get something back selling the old one while trading up.

It was not so very long ago I spent $1,275 for a Garmin 295. I had to look it up, but when new the Garmin 496 listed for $2,795. Considering the tech and flexibility of a new iPhone X, $1,256 sounds pretty reasonable. To me, of course. For others, enjoy the LOL’s.

That $1000 phone will do a lot more than any one of those one-trick pony Garmins. Including what the Garmin will do.
