I finally broke down and bought some Lightspeed Sierra headsets because I can't hear well and don't like asking the controller to repeat themselves continually. They have a cool feature of using a phone via bluetooth, but I'm trying to think of a time I might actually use this feature.

IFR rated? Calling clearance delivery from your airplane to get a clearance on a scuzzy day.

Just remember that it's illegal to operate a cell phone while airborne. FCC regs.

Can't you call CD on the radio, or use the phone before engine start?

I had mine connected on my first short solo XC (Zulu 1s) and I had called my flight time too close on my flight plan. Well, after a go around cost me a few minutes, my phone rings on short final (I had forgot to turn it off). It was flight watch tracking me down. I don't connect up the Bluetooth anymore. I can see if you are IFR and opening a flight plan, otherwise it seems like a liability to me. I just stick the phone under the earcup, if I need to do a briefing or something.

Depends on what carrier you're using (and which band the phone is operating.
One thing for sure, they don't tend to be too reliable at atltidude.

I use the Zulu bluetooth to use my iphone to call approach to get my clearance on the ground and also my release. Works a lot better than the blasted RCOs.

Well, I personally enjoy listening to music on cross country flights, but that is just me.

The Zulu 1 doesn't do Bluetooth music, only phone. I don't know about the Sierras. I play music through the accessory plug in on my intercom and then I can torture my passengers with my music, as well.

Lots of untowered airports with no clearance delivery. GCO's - quirky and never totally reliable

Using phone before start is what I usually do. However i've strangely had to explain to whoever was on the other end how I was going to get out of the airport with a ten minute void time while sitting in the FBO (as my explanation ate into my time)

Well then the Zulu 1 I purchased used must have been labeled a 1 by mistake, because it certainly does Bluetooth music off my iPhone. Great for cross country flights. :)

With the area tower phone numbers programmed in my phone it also serves as a great backup should my radios (panel and handheld) go dead.

I'm usually on flight following and find it too annoying to try to listen to music constantly interrupted.
