I've been on the iOS 12 beta for a few days and the gold master (final release) will be released today I believe.

I know a lot of folks keep their iStuff on older software. iOS 11 was certainly a bit of a bloated pig for us with older hardware (I own an iPhone 6S Plus and an iPad mini 4 that is purely for flying).

Apple really focused on breathing new life into to older hardware (all the way back to the iPhone 5S) with iOS 12 and they publicly stated in their latest iPhone reveal that they want to support their older phones in an attempt to reduce the amount of resources/mining they are using on new phones (who knows how truthful this is - but I thought it was good news for those of us who don't buy new hardware every 2 years). This was no joke - iOS 12 has made a huge difference on my iPhone 6S Plus - it is basically a new phone.

Anyways, long story short, iOS 12 is amazing. I'm amazed how snappy the software is now. I updated my iPad mini 4 last night as it was definitely not as quick as it was when I first got it. It wasn't bad, but it definitely could have some new life breathed into it. Again, it made a big difference. Word of caution - I haven't spent nearly as much time on the iPad mini 4 since I updated it as I have my iPhone 6S Plus. I am going to play with the iPad mini 4 this week and do a few flights with it to see how it performs.

So...if your one of those folks who hasn't updated their software to escape the inevitable bloat and "slowness" of the new software, you might seriously consider trying iOS 12. I did a full backup and then did a complete restore so that I could load iOS 12 onto a clean slate. I typically do this when a new version of iOS comes out and it has always served me well. iOS 12 may (or may not) be exactly what a lot of us were looking for with older hardware.

Cheers.

Guess I am one of the Neanderthals who likes to sit on the sideline. I finally went from 10 to 11 over the weekend while I still had the chance. I learned my lesson with Windows 8.

And looking for new wallpapers is about #142 on my priority list with any new electronic device with a screen.

Look forward to more PIREPs. Hope others can confirm it is as good as you say it is.

Guess I'm not sure about your wallpaper comment - I don't think there are any new wallpapers added anyways. I know he mentions it in the video, but that certainly wasn't my take away. If you went from 10 to 11, your going to be disappointed. iOS 11 was a hog (although it wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be). iOS 12 is what iOS 11 should have been.

The guy in the video said the first thing he did was go look for new wallpapers, and then spent about 45 seconds of a 5 minute video talking about wallpapers.

Don't get me wrong; I'm rooting for ios 12 all the way; I just choose to not be an early adopter.

Be near a fast wifi connection. The update is big. From my few minutes of playing with it I'd say my iPhone 7+ is faster in response to pretty much everything. Apps, photos, music menus, email, etc. I'm happy. If the bluetooth music feed stops having intermittent lapses I'll be thrilled!

Glad to hear! Yea I think it was about 2 GB download for me..

He has a couple videos on iOS12 - I may have linked the wrong one I was thinking of...

I’m always super hesitant to fall into apples “update” trap

If you don’t have enough room on the device to update, iOS will warn you that it is going to delete items and then reinstall them after the update. If the app is no longer in the App Store, you will lose it. There is no way to recover it, even if you back up the device to your computer before you start the update process.

How is battery consumption?

On iOS 9 & 10, I would get about 2-ish days between charges with normal use. Recently, I've seen my iPhone 6 go from 100% to 20% is 10 hours. A bit faster if I'm using a GPS heavy app like FF or MFB.

So the trend is for even numbered releases to increase performance and the odd numbered to increase battery life? Notice a trend here? :p

The battery on my 6S Plus is shot so I couldn’t tell you. In fact I am getting a battery replacement done on Wednesday.

I just upgraded 2 devices, so far no issues, Garmin Pilot came up fine, I will try flying with it tomorrow.

Yea ForeFlight has worked just fine for me thus far

There is a $29 option to get a new battery from Apple due to the "slowdown" kerfufel earlier in the year. Once you schedule it, it takes about 3 hours at the Apple store - breathed new life into my phone

Yep...scheduled one myself for Wednesday!

All they had to do was stop slowing down the processor on devices with older batteries. I already gave away my 3rd Gen iPad mini due to its horrible performance. It was only used for ForeFlight but was barely usable thanks to Apple's "help" to extend the battery life by slowing it down (even while plugged into power).

$29 to fix something that isn't broken but was necessary because of their code.

If you want to look at it that way. The code was to preserve battery life, but they never announced it, which got some folks panty’s in a twist. I just like getting a new battery for $29.

My phone just needs a new battery anyways. It is over 3 years old and at 80% capacity (which is when they recommend replacing it).

I did it through iTunes on on my desktop.

How? Sounds like something I'd like to do. I can plug my phone and iPad into a USB port on my Laptop and they show up as a Device. After that I don't have clue. I never use iTunes

This is a good step by step guide:

Okay, after half a day with it? My music streaming flaws are gone. Scrolling through photos is way faster. Scrolling through threads on this site is way faster. Everything is faster. Streaming videos like MNF is better, too. Battery life appears to be improved. Somebody might find a flaw but so far I can't.

Garmin Pilot works fine, my biggest complaint : they changed the interface, I keep hitting stupid smiling face key for some reason and they move the control panel...hey Apple, stop f#$&ing with the interface.

Undated my iPhone last night. Haven't really noticed any life altering changes, although I did move the new measuring tool to my unused apps folder.

What iPhone do you have? If it’s a newer model I could see it not being a huge difference. If an older model like my 6S Plus and you came from iOS11 you should see a big difference
