I'm used to holding for wake turbulence from departing jets when doing an intersection takeoff, but today ORF Tower gave me a 'hold for wake turbulence' and the departing traffic was.....a Piper Arrow. I was in the Baron.

Does the intersection t/o hold requirement for wake turbulence apply to ALL aircraft?

Yes, I know I could tell tower I am willing to waive the delay, but I wasn't in a real hurry.

Not that I know of. Can't find anything about wake turb. separation for two small aircraft weighing less than 12,500.

That's very likely a joke.

That's how I took it. More likely Local made a mistake and interjected humor to alleviate an obvious faux pas.

Possible.....but they aren't very humorous at ORF.

I was in awe that the Arrow actually wanted to taxi the whole way to the end of 23 for full length. In almost 100F, I was melting just taxiing to 23 at F.

If you know it won't be a factor you can tell the tower and they will then clear you for T/O with a "Caution Wake Turb."

It does happen. A Cessna 206 seaplane departed Bedwell Harbor, closely following his buddy in another 206.

The following 206 rolled into the water from the wake and all aboard were killed.

I was thinking he might have simply wanted to delay me so I wasn't overtaking him on the way out.

Were you both IFR? If you both were IFR going off the same runway, they'll need a mile. If you were VFR, there's really no reason to hold you other than SRS of 4,500 ft.

After the unfortunate loss of Jeremy Monnett (sp?), I've been thinking more and more about avoiding intersection departures. Yes, I know, the risk is low and not necessarily germane to this thread, but that extra bit of safety is nice to have.

I am not huge on intersection takeoffs, but 5/23 at ORF is 9000 feet long. Even with the intersection you still have something like 6500'. That is at least 1500 more feet than I need for balanced field (takeoff and climb to 50', reduce power and land) in the Baron and if you can't identify a problem on takeoff and put it back down in a single in that distance, no amount of runway is going to save you.

As it is, the Arrow sucked his gear up as soon as his wheels left the pavement, so it's not like he was waiting to see if he needed the extra runway.

I look at it this way...if they went to all that trouble to build the runway the least I can do is make use of it. :) but seriously, ya never know when you may need to abort the T/O.
