Anyone know how to get internet in your aircraft, it would be better than some weather services and other stuff I use.

Its very expensive per MB.

Check out GoGo. The Aviator 200

It's not only expensive per MB, but the installation is expensive. That's why the people who own our aircraft have opted out, much to the dismay of some of our charter customers who have been spoiled by wifi in the airplanes.

It's not worth the cost for piston airplanes, really it's aimed at corporate operators. Expensive install and expensive service! if you want weather, NEXRAD is available through XM, you can get radio from the same antenna. :D I think it's $500 per year for weather and most of the radio channels. :) The data will have to wait until you're on the ground for now. :D

Website says they suspended all sales of it as it basically sucks:

You would think in this day and age it would be better and cheaper.

As most know - us Cirrus drivers are horrible pilots. So when I'm cruising at 12,000 on auto pilot it would be kinda nice to be surfing the internet before I have to pull my chute to land... just sayin... it would be nice is all.

I have no problem getting Internet on the phone up to 7.5K

I'm developing a work-load reducing APP for you Cirrus guys. It interfaces with Siri (ironic, I know). The chute auto-deploys as soon as you utter words like #$@!.

Ground Control is just a company that sells them. Iridium still offers the GO! service but frankly understand that it mostly does SUCK. I think even in ideal conditions the max datarate is 2400 baud. Not exactly what people expect in the broadband era. Great for sending texts or very short textual emails. Sucks for anything else.

What do you use and is that consistent?

I virtually never have it above 2k agl. Sometimes, near the mountains it works at high altitudes. I assume this is because they have antennas on the ridges.

I fly to the Bahamas, XM weather drops off about 20 miles over Grand Bahama Bank, no good after that, I cancelled XM and use Miami Flight , I asked XM why they will not service all the Bahamas, they told me the Bahamas wanted too much money to use their weather towers. You can get real good weather from Google earth, but need internet .

Call www.hughesnet.com, get a satellite dish installed under a canopy/skylight.
Don't tell the FAA and have at it

Um, no. First off, not only do you have to not tell the FAA, you have to not tell Hughesnet. They will not provide service to RVs let alone airplanes. There are some dealers who specialize in providing RV installations but the biggest one out there just gave it up. The satellite dish is neither small nor light. You have to keep it pointed at the satellite (it is not like your XM antenna). Most of the units are designed to be used while the vehicle is PARKED. None of the sat TV units that are designed to be used moving have the transmit horn on them to my knowledge.

I have a FreedomPop hotspot but I never used it in the air. Something always gets in the way...oh yeah, I'm flying a plane!

I've seen some off the books install of car cell phone repeaters, with the receiver antenna outside.

I just fly lower and closer to a road, always works.

Freedompop just uses Sprint's cell network. If your (sprint) cellphone doesn't work, neither will Freedompop. Of course, I won't go anywhere near Sprint after a few customer service nightmares in the past.
