Instrument backlighting

What instruments are required to have backlighting for night flying?

For example, I noticed that my mag compass and CDIs are not backlit with the 6-pack. To see the CDI, I have to either use a flashlight or the glareshield light. For the compass, only a flashlight will do.

I don't think any are required. My Cherokee only has one backlit instrument and I use a red headlamp for everything else. It is a PITA, but it works.

Standard equip for night flying two headlamps with red/white switch and 2 flashlight one red one white. I can't count on the rentals, my headlamps work or I don't go.

I think unless you're flying NVGs you should be good. I had one of those luma strips installed on my plane and it works great. Doesn't have much glare and doesn't affect my night vision.

I don't have a FAR in front of me so I don't know how it is worded but does the instrument need to be fully operational? I would say if your instrument is equipped with a backlight then it would need to be operational to make it fully operational.
