But it's touch and go for a bit, yet. Y'all may have heard about the ice storm which battered the Northeast. On December 11 a falling branch took out the arm on my HughesNet satellite system(and slightly altered the shape of the dish). A few days later we received 14" of white stuff. Only as of yesterday, December 30, could HughesNet Service get here to get me back on-the-air. After he left I answered a few of the 542 e-mails in the queue; shut the system down, and went to Wiscasset to pay the property tax on my hangar.

When I came back and re-booted, no connection to the Internet. One hour with someone in India; tests and more tests; and he said he'll "pass it up to a higher authority and you'll be called within two days." #@%*&#@$%@#.

I called the service man who'd been here; and he said he won't be able to get back until around 4:00 Friday afternoon. "But keep trying; you might be able to get "on" for short periods until I replace the unit pointed at your dish."

After about five hours I've been able to get through to a few sites and here. But IMAGINE what's been happening everywhere while OFF since
December 11 --- and right now the response time is verrrrrryyy slow. And falling branches aren't covered by HughesNet warranty service.

So, a belated Merry / Happy to all, and HAPPY NEW YEAR. I haven't flown since October 16, there having been such continuing rain/fog/wind conditions.

Oh, would it be legal to post my website address here? If not, management council can delete this particular entry.

It's an ongoing work-in-progress, and obviously delayed by having been off the net since December 11, thereby unable to augment the site.

Welcome back! And I don't have any problems with your link! Heck, I wish it was as warm as some of those pics look!

Boy, that sure is some pretty scenery up there! I would sure like to visit Maine someday! :yesnod:

That's for sure. I had the good fortune to fly up to the North Pole (also known as Frenchville, Maine - KFVE), which receives Canadian cell phone towers. It was bitterly cold up there, but it was also gorgeous. The fact that it was a truly CAVU day for the flight made it that much better.

Welcome back, Harley! Glad you're finally getting things chipped out of the ice. I thought of you the other day as I was shooting the ILS into PWM; I listened to the AWOS is AUG and RKD and both were call -1/4sm, VV001 with temperatures so low I don't think I can repeat them here without having to put on a sweatshirt. Hopefully the satellite dish is the only victim of the winter storms.

By the way, thank you for putting your photos up on line! I've been wanting to see the full collection (though I'm sure there's plenty more to go) for a long time. Even despite the winter weather, I really miss Maine, and your pictures are a wonderful reminder of the seemingly endless stunning views we got to experience up there.

The "Cushing" Gallery is my home town. My cousin is the lobster buyer at Pleasant Point in those shots of the larger wharf(not Shann Pease's wharf).
The island just across the harbor is Gay Island. It was once owned by novelist(now deceased) Elizabeth Ogilvie whose winter home was just 1/2 mile up the road from where I grew up.

My site can hold up to 20,000 images; I don't expect to approach capacity, though augmentation has been delayed by my Internet problem. The Bath waterfront shot in the opening series of rotating pics is NOT an aerial; I walked up onto Sagadahoc Bridge during a cold day last March. And on your PWM > RKD runs you've probably flown over The Olson House(Cushing) many times. My Weatherbug is indicating 17° at Wiscasset Airport.

It took me an hour to get Internet this morning; response WHEN I get on is wikkid slow.
HughesNetService(from Waterville) shall return Friday afternoon. He thinks he'll need to again replace the transmitter.

I can't get into my own site; give me a little more identity on that which you reference; maybe I can answer your question by remembering. "D shaped structure?"

HR

I'm guessing he means the fort like structure at the end of the peninsula.

Oh, thanks! That's Fort Popham, down at Popham Beach at the bottom of Phippsburg. The original Fort Popham goes waaaaaayyy back into the Popham Colony, one of the earliest settlements on the East Coast. Google "Fort Popham Maine" for accurate information. The colonists couldn't take the brutality of the cold winter weather and deserted the Colony. The present Fort Popham was rebuilt in about 1909.

I photographed the structure from about every aerial angle; more of the shots shall appear in my site when I have more reliability of getting into it for uninterrupted periods.

Picture a North to South line; call the line Kennebec River. Fort Popham is at the South end of said line, on the West side, where the Kennebec empties into the ocean. Said river is the route sailed when a new Navy ship leaves Bath Iron Works and heads into the ocean for sea trials. Georgetown, my residence town, is on the East side of the Kennebec; therefore, 'cross the rivuh from Phippsburg. Just slightly up river from Fort Popham is the Phippsburg Church. I, also, nailed the church from various angles during the October 14 or 16 flights. Those will be in my site, eventually.

And that's the rest of the story of the "D structure."

EDITED: Google it, anyway, but briefly:

Have you ever shot around Fort Halifax, Harley? It's on the Winslow side of the river, across from Waterville, right at the confluence of the Kenebeck and Sebasticook (sp?) rivers. Junelle and I loved going to the park down there, it's probably one of the most photogenic places in Waterville.

Thanks, looks like it was built to last.
That coastline north of Portland and into Canada looks like it could be interesting to fly in a seaplane.

I probably will, at some point; but the only shots I've done up that way are in Augusta -- the Capitol Building, Water Street, the bridges. I tried to re-post in my last response a couple other shots of Fort Popham and the church. The files are large and during the upload there was a network interruption and the page didn't load.

My Weather Bug is now reading 9°(Wiscasset Airport - but that's only 3 or 4nm from where I sit). The wind is howling! Carson Daly(NBC) just said it's 19° in Times Square.

Harley,

I am going to be in Harpswell ME on July 4-11 maybe we cold meet up so I am not stuck with my wife her friend and her friend's husband. The only thing they are going to talk about is camp and I am going to be bored.

I am working on my wife so she will let me fly up. Her big thing is the lack of a car but her friend is driving up so I may have a chance.

Perfect! What I like most about this retirement mode is that I can "move" nearly on moment's notice. Stay in touch. While "they" talk camp we could be in my Skyhawk talking about what they're missing.

Who are your contacts in Harpswell? It's only a rumor that "Jerry knows everyone;" however, during/after my 27 years in business in Brunswick it's pretty certain that most of Harpswell knows me.

I tried to post a couple Harpswell photos but the 'Net isn't cooperating on the upload.

It's NOT rumor, it's true. No matter how much you try to deny it .

Funny, you are! And to rmciottijr: If I remember correctly, you fly both fixed wing and rotorcraft. And I remembered that your base is Brandywine.
Hmmmm; If you were to fly in this direction in the helo there's a waiting hay field about 22nm from my base Wiscasset Airport. An old friend of mine would get a hoot if we(??) were to land adjacent to the RC landing strip in his field. It's about 1.5sm from where I was raised. (Nicholas Wyeth -- I'm certain you know the name).

HR

Nuts; I tried to post my aerial photo of Nicky's field, but HughesNet didn't cooperate on the upload process.

The HughesNet service rep. came back today. He was somewhat frustrated that all seemed to be ready for working order, but no luck. ???????? Finally, he called a HughesNet # that only service techies have.
"Aha!" he said; "It's on THEIR end." Totally time-coincident with an hour or so after he had done a successful repair on Tuesday some data configurations went bad in the mother-lode at HughesNet. "They" reprogrammed something(s) while he was on the telephone and VOILA! everything is back to the speedy operation.

Happy New Year ----------- unless you live in Gaza.

HR,

No that's not me I wish I could fly a helicopter but heck I don't have time or money to fly the fixed wing how would I ever fly a helicopter. You were thinking of RotaryWingBob.

I will get you the name of the people we are renting from I am not making the arrangements my wife's friend is and she is a little worried they are going to skip town with the money LOL. I told her people in Maine don't do that.

I do know of one place we are going MAX Grill in Lewiston.

Thanks for the correction. It was the N99 Brandywine reference which came to mind, and then I rediscovered RotaryWingBob.

But with my Hughesnet back up to snuff, here's my shot of Nick Wyeth's large field. The different-colored strip is his RC planes' landing strip.

M & J Grill in Brunswick is very good, as is Richard's. They are just diagonally on opposite sides of Maine Street. Stay in touch.
