Getting groceries this evening and I had a bottle of wine. The cashier cards me and for the life of me I can't find my ID. I am going through my wallet and she says "Is that a military ID? That might work"

I said no, its a pilot license and it isn't a photo ID.

She is doing her thing and goes "Who do you fly for?" I say "I just fly for fun"
She says "Oh I was thinking you are a real pilot"

I felt all defensive. I go well I mean I can get into a machine and defy gravity which seems pretty dang piloty to me.

And she goes "Yeah but you don't get paid for it. That's not the same thing."

I got totally owned by a cashier at Kroger.

You should have told her you direct aviation films and asked her if she's ever been in movies...

I did feel really good when I go I swear, I am 40. I was born in 76 and she and the bagger both go "no way you are 40"

Of course they could have been thinking "No way you are that young"... Dammit!!!

To quote the 40 year old Virgin:
-"But what if she laughs at me?".
--"Then you punch her in the ***** head if she laughs. -- No. I mean, you punch her in the head....emotionally." :D

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

The other day my wife told our waitress that I am a senior citizen, and she gave us the senior discount without even asking my age...... and that's not funny....:frown2::frown3:

I really should let my hair grow out. It's almost all white on top now, like dad. He was all white by 40, I took a few more years. But I'm seeing a way to be an ultra cheapskate. Hahaha.

They card everyone here, it's the law. No fun.
Last weekend my nephew says "So, how old are you uncle Glenn"? Initially, I think WTF, you're my sister's son and you don't have any idea, but I say "I'll be 60 next month." And he starts making a scene, "no way, no way, I figured you were like 48"....;) **** yeah, life is great!!!

Actually to kids these days, saying you're a youtuber is probably far more impressive than saying you're a pilot.

It's kind of insane. I visited my mother in Wisconsin in the mid 2000s, (grew up in the Midwest, but living in Norway since 1990's) and she, my wife and I were stopping at the grocery store and I was buying some beer.

I was 50-something...gray hair, look my age. Cashier asks me for ID and I seriously thought she was kidding and said something like "you KNOW I'm older than 18 right?" She get actually angry "SIR we are REQUIRED to ask for ID from ANYONE buying alcohol!"

Taken aback I handed her my Norwegian drivers license, which after she asked what kind of ID it was, tried to enter it but of course the number was rejected by her register. My mommy had to buy me beer....at 55.

That is insanity. Years ago they used to have a margin, and an older person would never get asked while sure, a 24 year old might get carded, but this is really something. Also that they don't have any contingency for turists from abroad. Very strange indeed.

And I realized too...most of us that grew up many years ago can remember as minors hanging around a liquor store waiting with friends for someone that "looked cool enough" and catch them on the way in, ask them to buy beer for us.

So I'm picturing some eighty year old guy who had to give back his drivers license or something, no picture ID, maybe hanging around a liquor store asking some kid that looked "cool" to buy him his beer.

The thing that I find weirdest of all, seems like others living there when we talked with them, just see this is normal.

I work in a retail store. Our register forces us to scan drivers license. If we manually enter the date our supervisor has to come over and verify.

Yesterday had a lady buy some cold medicine and need id for it. Scanned it and she asked why I needed it. Said kids these days do things to it. She says maybe you shouldn't be selling it. Mmmm maybe not you're the one buying it though.

I don't know if all states do it, but many have "photo IDs". Basically a drivers license without the license to drive. For identification purposes.

Many restaurants and other alcohol selling establishments have at "card everyone" policy. That way it's just part of the process. It helps keep them out of legal trouble.

If you card everyone then you're not profiling.

It's hard to humiliate a pilot (what with our egos and all), but that certainly works.

My own embarrassing moment

1973- A party in Greenwich Village
Sweet Young Thing: "You used to be a pilot?"
Me: "Still am."
SYT: "Who do you fly for."
Me: "Myself."
SYT: "Do you make any money at it?"
ME: "No, they stopped paying me."
SYT: "Why?"
Me: " I stopped dropping napalm on people."
SYT: (Throws drink in my face). "Murderer!"

I think I read somewhere that it is a CERTIFICATE and that you are required to have a government issued ID when exercising its privileges.

Maybe the cashier knew that a REAL pilot would know that.

This wouldn't have happened if you wore your pilot shirt (including plastic collar inserts) with epaulettes.

Lately I have been getting the senior citizen discount without ever asking. They just assume it. Now that's really not funny.

I think he hid his ID on purpose so that she would see his pilot certificate and would be impressed.

BTW- You should have said that you fly for United. She'd really be impressed. LOL

That's depressing.

I heard that they have expiration dates on them too. Does that mean when it expires they can no longer be a passenger?

It means they want you to check in every so many years to make sure you haven't expired.

I've actually gotten away wth using my pilot cert as proof of age at a bar once. Somehow my DL walked out of my wallet and I didn't noticed until the lady asked me at the bar.

"Uhh, crap.... Uhh will you accept this ID? It has my birthdate right here!"

She looked it over, said "don't screw me over", and walked off.
