Everything Offends Me
I'm in Winston-Salem, being wooed by Big Tobacco to come out and work here.

Its nice here. Its almost exactly like New Hampshire, just hotter and I presume with less snow.

I just might be an NC resident here shortly. Yay NC.

NC = home of basketball powerhouses.... Duke, NC State, Tarheels.

maybe virginia was the word he misspelled.

I like North Carolina. Never lived there but spent quite a few vacations there when I was young.

I especially remember soft shell crab season.

Joe

North Carolina is beautiful. Leslie and I stayed at a B&B in Balsam, NC (on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, near Ashville) a few years back, and had a great time. Beautiful country, and friendly people.

Nice state, lousy work ethic. But if all you're trying to do is convince people to smoke, you'll do OK.

Lol. Being that I work in IT, I don't think that's a concern. Besides, my understanding is that no one actually tries to convince people to smoke, but rather they convince smokers to change. I doubt many non smokers would be convinced to smoke these days, let alone smoke a specific brand.

So....if everyone has lousy work ethic but me, doesn't that mean I have an awesome opportunity to succeed?

Not necessarily. In those situations, they will do their best to drag you down to their level. Or make it so miserable you will want to get off the island.

So....if everyone has lousy work ethic but me, doesn't that mean I have an awesome opportunity to succeed?

Nice state, lousy work ethic. .
And just what do you base that on?

I hope it is not Brooks signature. I am afraid Ms Brook does not know what REAL work is .

To Nick: stay in NM, you would HATE NC!

I am a little dissapointed at the attitude towards the South in this thread, especially with regards to work ethic. If you look at the trend in U.S. job creation and corporate relocation you'll notice that most of the manufacturing and service sector's production has moved or is moving the the South. The better, less militant union environment, GOOD work ethic, less expensive power and lower taxes have all combined to entice companies to relocate to the South. Southerners are fine people that have manners, work hard and are smart.

Where have the foreign auto manufacturers chosen to put assembly plants?

DOn't believe the bull**** about work ethic.

In the RTP area, there are a LOT of hard workers with great work ethic. It's been a high-tech area. Likewise many areas near Charlotte.

I'm sure there are folks in the state with lousy work ethic, but I could also say that about any state, including Iowa.

Don't come to North Carolina. You will hate it.

Lousy weather, lousy beaches, lousy mountains, lousy Bar B Que, mean people.

Mary and I like North Carolina so much we are looking to eventually retire there. Great people, plenty of pride, friendly, go out of their way to help you, real estate prices look great for buyers and plenty of beach for the Mrs., I just need an airport with an available hangar.

What more can a person ask for? It sure beats the rat race here.

Well all I can say is that I cannot STAND that vinegar based BBQ crap I had in NC. Other than that...loved the state!

Nice state, lousy work ethic.

Lived and worked in "the southern six" for over three years (la, ms, al, ga, sc, nc) and, well, yes. Give me the folks in Wisconsin and South Dakota any day.

Also, the war is definitely not over.

I've seen a few people, from NC say "Don't come to North Carolina." Is that a dig on me, or is that an inside NCer joke I don't get yet?

Because what I've seen, so far, is that the work ethic (at least from the people I've been working with from afar for the last 7 months) has been about on par with Albuquerque, except they are a bit slower paced (not a bad thing, probably just a cultural difference).

The other thing I've noticed is that there is some racism in NC, but its about the same as the racism I saw in New Hampshire, with the difference being that there are actually black people in North Carolina. New Hampshire is racist without being homogenized which just seems a bit scary to me sometimes. How do you judge that which you don't ever experience?

The plain and simple fact, however, is that I will be signing the offer letter and returning it tomorrow. I'll be North Carolina's newest resident in a short amount of time.

It might be OK if they just had some decent golf courses.

LOL! Funny you say that. I checked out Tanglewood, Clemons, and some place just north of Advance, and saw some of the most gorgeous golf courses I've ever seen.

Best part (to me)? Water hazards that are actually real water hazards, not some misplaced water hole in the desert that looks like it doesn't belong. lol.

Yeah, Pinehurst stacks up pretty well compared to Cactus Flats or whatever they have in NM.

Ever try to build anything there?

The RTP is full of transplants. So, yeah you can push paper at Glaxo with the same efficiency as somewhere else.

I'm sure there are folks in the state with lousy work ethic, but I could also say that about any state, including Iowa.

There are duds everywhere, but look at construction productivity stats.

Ever try to build anything there?

Yes. Several things in fact. Ranging from 2000 SF office buildouts to 100,000 SF buildings to transmitter sites. In locations from Charlotte to Greensboro to RTP to Manteo. Frankly, the build quality and on-time performance was better than some other locations, including parts of the Great Plains.

The RTP is full of transplants. So, yeah you can push paper at Glaxo with the same efficiency as somewhere else.

Believe what you want. No point in arguing with you because your posts indicate a lack of an open mind and an unwillingness to accept the fact that others have much better experiences.

Very hot and humid. Not for yours truly. In my paltry number of excursions I noticed that folks in the styx get a little slow. However, I do know lots of people who rave about it. Congrats. Albuquerque sounded like a war zone anyway.

I am guessing they mean it is sick there!

I've been blessed to have always had a job that involves travel (I love travel). And, I've lived in or visited almost every square inch of the lower 48. Over the years I've developed a very simple test to gage an area. It's quite simple, and it allows one to quickly evaluate the attitude of the average individual in a town (or a particular area of a larger town).

Go to the local Wal*Mart (or any other big box if there isn't a Wal*Mart in the area) and look at how many carts are returned to the cart corrals and how many are left strewn all over the parking lot. Since, in most areas, a good cross section of town shops at Wal*Mart this simple observation provides insight into how lazy the average person is and how much, or little, they respect the property of others.

Then go inside and ask the manager how old the building is and if the toilets have been recently renovated. Then check out the toilets to see how the abuse of them compares to the age of the building. I've seen one year old toilets that look 10 years old and 10 year old toilets that look new.

This simple test, along with a few others (that I won't go into here for brevity), will nail a town quickly and easily.

Some of you may be laughing and laugh if you want...but it's very accurate.

Nick, my grand-kids (and their parents :)) live in High Point. I've flown into Winston-Salem and more recently I have started flying into GSO (Greensboro) both seem to be great airports, it looks like more GA at Winston-Salem than GSO but that's to be expected. I don't recall a lot of hangar space at INT and they have secluded tie downs. Of course this is just observations from flying into there, I have no first hand experience.

There are also a couple of private airports around but I don't know anything about them I think there is a fly-in community nearby.

I would imagine that there will be smoking allowed in the offices of a Tobacco company so you should have plenty of work removing the tar and nicotine from the pc's

I would love to be in your shoes. If I could make the kind of money in that area that I make here I'd pack up in a minute. Of course that would be to be closer to the kids, but it is truly a beautiful part of the country.

As for the kind of people you meet in an area, I've lived in the South most of my life, spent the last few years in Connecticut, and have spent some time in other areas of the US. I meet the kind of people I expect to meet wherever I am. I always expect to meet nice people and they are. If you go into a place knowing ahead of time you are only going to meet, lazy or jerks, or some other ill conceived idea... you will probably meet those kind of people.

Excellent, Nick. Gotta do what's best for you.

Welcome to the correct time zone. :D

A former boss spent some time as president of a furniture mfg company in Vermont. You'd think "Vermont, home of Yankee industry? Those workers must work like bees in a hive."

According to this guy's experience running two factories in VT, you'd be wrong.

No Nick. They don't want outsiders coming in and screwing it up, like Californians do to every state they take over, like WA/OR/ID. Don't take it personally.

Cool. Exciting for you!

BTW - I don't care who employs you. Stop smoking. Smokes cost $6/pack. Smoke 1/day = $42/wk = $2184/yr = almost $32,000 in 10yrs if you invest that weekly savings in a Vanguard Index 500 fund.

Food for thought, amigo.

Been smoke free for over 3 weeks. Well...tobacco smoke. I've been vaping, and I feel like a million dollars. Have taste buds, I don't stink, and I only spend about $13/week on it.

Go me.

Awesome!!!! Good for you.

(Now start dumping that $$$$ into a Vanguard 500 fund and you'll have your airplane!!!:D:D)

Welcome to NC! We spent nearly four years of flying weekends searching for The Promised Land. We loved the mountains, but water beckoned. We looked from the outskirts of Philadelphia to the Georgia coast, and along the Alabama/northwest Florida coast, and kept coming back to a beautiful charming village on the Albemarle Sound of NC... and have been content here for eight years.

Good stuff:
-people take care of their history here, instead of tearing it down for new and fashionable, so the buildings are pretty. My church is 300 years old, some of the downtown buildings date from the early 1700s. Really, really pretty.
-the locals are cordial and welcoming. Haven't been flipped off a' la Philly since we got here.
-there's a real sense of community. Even as a newcomer, you're part of things here, if you want to be. (Don't come here and try to shove people around with your Brooklyn accent, though. They don't shove all that easy. They smile politely and change the subject.)
-No traffic to speak of. Honking is from Canada geese, not trucks and taxi cabs.
-Local businesses are helpful and competent. I walk in the hardware store downtown and have my choice of employees who know where to find what I want. And, if I need enough of it, they'll special order and match BigBox's price.
-If I can't find it, the internet has it, and UPS/FedEx delivers to my door.
-The old-timer neighbors will show up on your doorstep before you get the moving van unloaded with a cake or heaping plate of cookies, chat politely, and then get out of your way, but not before asking if there's anything you need. Be sure to get a name and phone number-- you'll find those good people a fount of good information.
-Did I mention how beautiful this area is? Cypress trees growing out into the bay, expanse of blue water transitioning almost seamlessly into sky...

Less good:
-work ethic? Well, you gotta understand, people don't respond to 'pushy' here. And there are some holidays not observed in NooYawk, primarily the First Day of (you-name-it) Season-- deer, duck, bow-hunting, striper--. Ain't nobody comin' to paint yer house that day. Relax. They'll git 'er dunn, eventually, and the price will be fair. And you will listen to a lot of great stories about who used to live in this house, or the character next door. Listen. It's worth it. You can't get this sort of entertainment on TV.
-Weather: I don't know what y'all are talkin' about. Sure it gets hot here. But I've been in Philly when you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. At least we generally have a pleasant little breeze off the water. We get several inches of snow almost every year, enough to be pretty, but hardly enough to shovel. My peonies are happy, but so are my banana trees!
-Racism? Can't say I've noticed it in this small town, surely not as much as I saw in Ohio. But then, we're about evenly split, here black and white, and have been for hundreds of years. Many Hispanic farm and construction workers, too. Nearly all folks just trying to earn a living and raise a family. When we first moved south, to upstate SC, my husband's new boss said of the violent subcultures there, "Jus' don't make a pass at any girl wearing a tube top and keep your pusher paid up, and you'll be fine." (apparently the rednecks mostly prey on each other, and so do the inner city blacks.)
-Jobs? There you got me. If you want a job around here, you'd better bring your own. Our once-thriving textile businesses went to Mexico and points south some years ago. Our luxury-sport-fishing-boat-building industry is struggling. The real estate boom has busted, because the folks in Joizy can't sell their property there in order to move here.
-Politics, local and State? ----*Sigh.*----- back-slappin', crooked good ol' boys. Not NC's finest attribute. Hope springs eternal... November's a 'comin'.

In short, if you're coming here, at least to my small corner of paradise, leave your impatience, your smug superiority, your rosy view of how much better it was back 'home', your assumption that 'somebody else' will contribute to the local charities and pick up the trash, back wherever you moved from. Come with a cheerful attitude of becoming part of this community and finding things you love to become involved in. You'll be 'home' here before you know it.

Ok - aviation content - sorta.

A few years ago a guy put a Cessna 150/152 on southbound I-75 not too far from my house. Merged with rush hour traffic without swapping paint with anyone, and after he stopped, pushed it over to the side as best he could to let traffic by.

First person that went by waved with the middle finger as they passed.

Welcome to Detroit.
