I did not know this.

The minority Democrats in the Senate actually represent more Americans than the majority Republicans do.

No particular opinion to express, just thought it was an interesting fact.

Yes, a tired mantra that I keep hearing repeated by the bitter blue staters around here yelping that the northeast should seceed. As it happens, I agree with them. America will be a better, freer country without the people in these states.

In the meantime, it means didly. As anyone who has bothered to crack a civics book knows, the House is the place to go if you want representation based on population. The Senate, on the other hand, gives equal representation to each state. For good reason.

Whoa Dude! You definately would not be freer (is that a word?), well, more free without the people in those states. The National guardsman from NY are credited with being crucial to breaking the stalmate in the trenches during wwi. The 50th Amored Division is credited with breaking out of headgerow country in Germany that began the first amored advance after D-Day, and saw more days in combat than any active duty unit. Are we a bastion of Democratic corruption and clueless liberals? You betcha:) But dont be lumping us all in together. Besides, we managed to get rid of our sissy NJ Governer. We did well with Kean and then Whitman. The Democrats werent in office for a year and Christ, what a mess.

I just think it think it speaks to the genius of the founding fathers. A house that reflect locals over regional. A senate that reflects regional over local and a executive that looks at the whole picture.

corj....I admire your "glass is half full" attitude!!

Yeah, if only most of the major players in each branch didn't spend so much time reflecting on getting re-elected.

Amen, brother.

On one hand, their pre-occupation with getting re-elected makes them vulnerable to corruption. OTOH, their pre-occupation with getting re-elected is what gives us a real voice in our government.

Yep, a classic two edged sharp stick thingy.

Too bad that pilots usually get poked with that "sharp stick thingy". :hairraise: :martini::martini::martini::martini: :goofy:

Welcome to a bicameral legislature in a representative Republic.

The House of Representatives was meant to represent the people, and their numbers are apportioned on that basis each ten years by the census.

The Senate was never meant to represent the people. It is supposed to represent the STATES. That is why there are two Senators per state regardless of population. The Senators were not even elected by popular vote until the Seventeenth Amendment. Previously Senators were selected by the State Legislatures.

The 17th Amendment destroyed any state representation in the federal government, turning the Senate into simply a second lopsided version of the House. The direct result of this is a stronger federal government that can ride roughshod over the States which no longer have any direct representation at the federal level. Probably the worst Amendment to the US Constitution other than the 16th, which contradicts the original Constitution and allows unapportioned (income) taxes.

Thus endeth the civics lesson.

The Senate should not be representing any Americans, it should be representing the States.

The extremely wealthy folks who actually run our nation are in a smaller minority still, as they always have been.

Before 1914 Senators were elected by state legislatures. Now we have two bodies that represent the people and none that represent the states.

If all the new england states succeeded, and formed their own more-imperfect union, it would take than about four hours to run out of money and declare war on the rest of us, so they could continue to extort money for stupid things.

If all the New England states succeeded we wouldn't be in the mess that we are. If all the New England states seceded and formed their own union they wouldn't be taking any of the national debt with them.

...and it would take them about twenty seconds to create new and more debt for themselves.

This is entertaining coming from Residents of WI and FL, which receives close to $2 and $5 in federal spending for every $1 in taxes collected vs around $0.80 on the dollar that NY and MA receive.

Because people in WI and FL obviously support the policies that result in that else they would not live there?

How are these extremely wealthy folks in a position to run our nation?

You are not really serious are you? Of course they do thru corruption and greed. When asked 70 years ago..... Who really runs the United states mr. President? FDR replied " just a few and you'd be surprised how few." Who do you think pays off the corrupt congress?! Poor people?!

I'm pretty sure these corrupt congresscritters did not get where they are on just the votes of the rich. Seems to me a lot of poor people support corruption in Congress.
