I could have bought a Nice Cessna

What the heck is the price of Gunnite these days?

This was 40k for 20k gallons in 2005.
I didn't pay for it but the former owner left the receipt in a drawer
Wondering how much the prices have changed in 9 years

That looks about right. roughly $1000/foot of length back then for a diving pool. Your's isn't a diving pool but makes up with the spa. You shouldn't have any trouble with the chemistry on that.

It's not bad at all. I probably only put $300 into maintenance on it this year.

What is the closing pool process? Do you drain it? In AZ we don't have to close the pool.

No never drain it.
I cut the chlorinator down, cut the pump runtimes down and put a safety net over the pool.

I have heard that draining it could cause it to crack because you go from having 1000s of pounds of constant pressure pushing out to none and ground shifting can then crack it.

I drained it half way one time because I was told doing that then telling was the only way to get rid of hard water.

I have always maintained my pools in rentals, and owned homes. I find it cathartic to go out and check the chemicals, brush the plaster, and check everything out. The house we're in now has some huge ass pine trees above the pool.. they make me mad..

Chain saw time. I had a large Oak near mine. Damned acorns looked sick in the pool. Chain saw fixed that.

I'm seeing bids from 48-56k for a pool/spa/grotto, paver deck with matching thin pavers on the existing covered patio and a cage. Minor site work is required as the backyard isn't totally level. Off the top of my head, it's a 300 sq. ft. pool dug to 6 ft. at the deepest point. Orlando, FL area

My wife's hook into me is that she's saying that I can finally get a plane when the pool is finished. Off course, it will take some time to generate the funds :yikes:

We did the pool first as well. Three years later, I grabbed up a plane. Since my kids were about 3-5 at the time it was pretty good timing.

Trust me pool prices have increased. Its like a new house build. You can get a base model or go expensive with upgrades. We did a lot of water features and equipment upgrades.

Or, you could build a natural swimming pool and avoid the chemicals altogether.

I grew up swimming in a natural swimming pool. We called it a stock tank. Complete with cows and floating cow pies. We scared the cows so bad one time that they didn't come in for a drink for 3 days. Got in a little trouble for that.

Just a word of advice, don't kick a fresh cow pie when its hot.:lol::lol:

I did a lot of custom stuff too. Trust me, they will fluck it all up unless you stand over them every minute. Eye shaped spa, dual spillways, beach entry, raised bond beam, recessed diving board, tile animals, quad drains, water fountain, rotating multi-color lighting and more. They didn't start out right on anything.

I could have bought a nice used late model Cessna 172 or something for the price of the pool I just bought. Pool construction starts next week. :mad2:
We just had our house built.

Oh well the family will enjoy it.
A pool is a must have in Arizona.

Atleast I'm keeping the FBO happy with my rentals.

Were just starting the pool process. MX on the plane would be cheaper. Plus there are options other than bulldozing it over when you're done with the plane,

If money were no object, I would have a lazy river.

Could you imagine. Give me a tube, a hat, and one of those floating beer coolers and I would just float in circles around my house.

Its a good thing I don't have FU money or I would do lots of dumb stuff.

And my pool would look just like this so people flying over get a laugh

We have water wall, 2 spill pots, 4 water fountains, multi color led lights, 4 mosaic tile turtles on the over size Baja step, 4 unbrella sleeves. We didn't do a in ground spa. I have a big above ground spa.

If able, share some of the pics of the progress.
I have never seen one being built before

The guy who came with the backhoe was the worst. He couldn't read the print for nothing. After he got the hole dug he realized he left his giant rock dental pick at the other end of the hole. He said he was going to go around the side and over my lawn, and sprinklers to get it. I said 'no you are not'. We had to rig up a 50' hunk of chains to drag it into the hole, then across the bottom of the dirt, and up the shallow side so he could put it back on the truck. What a jack***.

I had an above ground hot tub with the wood sides. Once I got to be objective, it didn't fit the style of the yard, or the pool we were building. I sold it for $400 and just put the hot tub in the side of the pool. Turned out real nice, and looks interesting. With the 250BTU heater, it gets from 40F to 100F in about 60 minutes.

For shade, I didn't want anything that sticks in the pool because we use an auto pool sweep. after it was completed, I put up six 4x4 posts 12' up and I can string a green sun shade all the way across the middle and shallow end to keep the sun at bay. I'm really white so I need it for my skin.

Wow, if it's that bad just for a pool, I can't imagine how bad it must be when building an entire house (something I have yet to embark on, but would like to do some day).

We just built a house, I had to go there nearly daily to stay on top of things.

Found:

Wrong brick, rip out and re-do
Wrong interior doors, replace
Wrong door hardware, replace
Wrong bathroom design, rework (luckily found before sheet rock was up)
Installed cracked granite, replace
I'm sure there is more, just can't remember right now

I also had to stay on top of them to be sure they installed all the upgrades per contract.

GM "I didn't know we were to do that" or "I though we were installing the standard package"
ME "It's in the contract, and online on your web site. READ it"

We are now working through the punch list.

It seems to me, if you are planning on getting a pool, or buying a house with a pool you won't be happy unless you plan on paying someone to maintain it and do that from the start.

Those that I know that pay someone to maintain their pool never have problems and love it and those that try to do it on their own think it's a giant PITA and hate it.

Yep, absolutely right. In my case, I'm too cheap to pay someone to do that stuff, so I just curse it.

The other part is temperature. Ohio is a crappy place for a pool, even with the solar heaters. Texas, AZ, etc., very different story.

All that said, when it's in balance, looks pretty, and a good temperature to swim in, I do love it. I also wish I could sell the damn thing without selling the house.

Closing is pretty simple. Took us 1-2 hours with a couple friends helping. Throw chemicals in, blow out the lines and plug them, dump some antifreeze in as appropriate. Then put the cover on. Needs 2 people minimum, works better with 3.

Pictures?
I have zero shade which means there are days when it is too hot to swim. It s gross, you get in and start sweating.

I bought an umbrella and cemented it into the ground and was thinking about getting 3-4 more to shade around the pool. Your idea sounds more solid.

You might want to consider solar pool cooling. It's the same as my solar pool heat, just runs the water up to the roof at night to cool it off.

What????
You run water to the roof to cool it off?

I run it on the roof to heat it during the day. :)

Look into it some, but if you run it at night when it's cool out, reverse is supposed to happen. I haven't looked into it heavily because cooling the pool is not my priority.

Would love to.. They are pushing the deck up too.. however, it's a rental.. Might have to get creative with a big spade bit and some round up.

Not sure why, but I don't have a way to add pics to a post. I don't have any online either, cuz I'm funny that way.

If you go to Six Flags and look at the grottos, it's designed like that. I used this stuff http://www.shadenet.co/shade-net.html http://www.homedepot.com/p/Easy-Gar...-Green-Sun-Screen-Shade-Cloth-74050/100556688 in six foot wide rolls and stitch two together to make 12'. Then, I trimmed it in two elongated triangle shapes to break up the symmetry and make it look a little better. Cement a 4" cold rolled box metal plug in the ground with lots of cement, drop in the 12' wood poles, and I used a set of pulleys and cables to erect it in summer and remove it in fall when the wind picks up. It also helps reduce evaporation a lot, and provides shade in the afternoon hours when we swim.

Best to mark the sun traverse during summer and put your shade up to maximize coverage from noon-5PM. I was going to add a tethered breeze wall on the west for maximum protection, but so far it hasn't been needed.

Oh we opted out not to do a Heat pump in the pool until later.

I'm not sure if I want to spend additional 4K for a heat pump to heat the pool. We can add it later.

There are systems that will heat and cool your pool. Not sure how it works cooling the water.

Penis shape pool LOL. No thanks.

I will take pictures of the progress.

Whoa! sometimes a pool is just a pool Dr. Freud.
I don't know what you are seeing there.

Maybe you see a "penis" because that's what you want to see.

I just thought it was a nice layout

Well, I'm old school. I just bought a $1600 propane induced draft simple heater. It gets used so infrequently that I wasn't gonna pony up for the fancy heat exchangers. In fact, my heater just broke the other day, so I have to fix the buttons on the membrane panel. Crappy design for outdoor. I'm going to a pushbutton momentary contact switch to get away from the membrane problems.

I'm not sure how much you'd need the heat to get to your desired temperature, but consider rooftop solar. The up-front cost is higher, but aside from being free to operate, it will also reduce your AC bills. We had the house thermostat set 5F warmer this summer and it felt cooler.
