It was her own logbook.

I recently bought a 182 & also reinstated my CFI. After not instructing for slightly over 23 years ago it's nice to be in the right seat again. When I started back into flying last September my wife of only 7 years was a bit apprehensive. In fact, she was terrified of "small planes". She has good reasons that we won't go into now. The first few fights we took into the wild blue yonder she was nervous but liked it overall. Now she's hooked.

In prepping for my CFI ride a few weeks back I had her sit in the left seat of our 182 for the first time. She commented on how different "things" on the panel looked. She called it a dashboard but we'll overcome that soon. I performed a few steep turns, some slow flight, & soft & short takeoffs & landings. I let her follow through on the controls. She was thrilled to be in the pilots seat.

So today, we were headed 50 miles away to Costco. I told her I had a surprise for her & stopped at an FBO. When we went inside I told her to pick out a logbook she liked. She was stunned. She picked a wine colored medium sized logbook. She's a winemaker by trade so the color suited her.

I told her that while were taking trips in the 182 she might as well sit in the left seat & log the time. Since I have five, almost, six full logbooks I certainly didn't need more time.

I'm looking forward to seeing her fill the pages of her now empty logbook.

You're having way to much fun with your new plane. Enjoy. Have you flown to KJSY yet? Can ya give me a PIREP on it.

Cool. My wife is perfectly content to fly with me anywhere, anytime in our 182, but has ZERO interest in touching any of the controls. As nice as it would be to have a second pilot I'm gonna have to wait until my 16 month old dude is old enough to see over the instruments.

Damn. I thought my 20-30 min drive to Costco was bad. I mean I love me some Costco, but if i had to fly to one...well.....that would be OK too I guess. Any excuse to fly.:D

I haven't flown into Joseph yet but a friend of mine did recently. She flew her 172 there & they borrowed a couple of bikes & peddled into town. She said it was a good time. Apparently, the local car dealership will give you a ride too. It sounds like the town is very aviation friendly. There's couple of good breweries there too. We went up there last fall on our motorcycle & brought home several growlers of beer. I lightly tasted through the beer flights since I don't like to consume much when I'm riding. Alcohol & motorcycles are a bad combo.

If we're going somewhere she's good with it. Doesn't matter whether it's VMC or IMC, she's fine. Otherwise I can go have fun on my own. I rarely just fly around with no where to go, but if I did she wouldn't be with me.

Something doesn't sound right... 'Spent $12.95' and 'Costco' aren't usually in the same sentence, much less the same story. Usually it's the same for me with 'FBO' and 'Spent $12.95'.

;)

My sons said I should go for my CFI after I'm done training, and teach them. Sounds like a good deal to me, and that was a pretty cool story!

A few decades ago when my 38 year old son was 16 I owned an FBO & had a Blanik L-23 for glider training. My son wanted to learn to fly the glider. I took him up a few times & found myself being very hard & impatient with him. After that, I let another GFIG give him lessons. I still don't know why I behaved that way. I guess in the back of my mind I thought since he was my offspring it should have been easy for him. Teaching close friends or family can be a slippery slope...and yes, I'm mindful of that experience when I think of instructing my wife.

The Costco run was a $600.00 bill. To be fair $275.00 of that was contact lenses for me. Two year supply. With only the two of us in our household we always debate over if Costco pays for us. But it's nice to have a years worth of toilet paper & dill pickles again.

Exactly..... where else can you get 5 gallons of mayonnaise... in one jar.

Its just me and my wife. We go to Costco to buy bulk items, usually dry goods. Like two 50 pound bags of rice. That might last us a year. In NM Costco is a 2.5 hour drive for us, so we only go about 3 or 4 times a year and make a day of it. After Costco, we hit the Asian store for my wife, then off to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant.

You could have bought the logbook in a ten-pack and saved $0.30 per single unit on them at Costco too! LOL!

"Oh look! They have a sale on the three-pack of pianos!"

Haha! What is it like a 1.50$ for a hotdog and a drink at Costco? You could practically feed the whole neighborhood block for 20$.

Which winery. I love that area. I even made a barrel of Syrah from Wahluke Slope grapes in 2009 (still have about 12 cases of it left).

Yeah, but once you go inside, you're doomed.
Doomed! I tell you!
(assuming that the food court is outside, like the old school Costcos)
Save money on the junk food so you can spend lots on merchandise...or is it cheap food because they know you're broke after shopping? I know it's easy for us to walk out of there spending $100 and Costco is only 15 minutes away from me..

Yeah, I'm mindful of that too. I'm more of a "you know your stuff, so i'll pipe down. When they were 16, I taught them how to drive, and the first few times out, it was "watch every thing," and I had them watch every thing when I was driving too. Nothing like a 16 year old telling you all of your mistakes while driving. It helped both of us. After the 4th outing, we'd do a follow-up after the drive.

My daughters and I were driving across the country, and my 16 year old was driving through Oklahoma City, and took a wrong turn off of I-40 while I was taking a nap. The GPS told her to head north, and we were going to see the Grand Canyon. She was terrified about me getting mad, and I looked at the GPS, had her pull off (it was rush hour), and we figured out where we were. "No worries," I said, "we're all safe, and now we can get something to eat, and get back on our way!"

Consider yourself lucky. Our minimum is $200. Impulse purchases make it harder.

"But honey, we each need a kayak, and they're so cheap here!"

It's easy to do. We try to limit ourselves to only buying bulk of things we can't at a regular grocery (Paper towels, bottled water, laundry detergent etc.) but always end up coming out with more than we bargained for. It adds up quick!

I enjoyed the $1.50 hot dog and drink right after I filled the tank with gas, cashed my last Costco Amex rewards check, and after eating the hot dog, walked over to Customer Service and canceled my membership and got paid back that year's membership fees on the way out. Hahaha.

(Once they dropped Amex and went to the crappier deal for us with Citi (better deal for them), I was *out*. See ya!)

Haha I hear ya! Everytime we walk through line the cashier's always push this "executive membership". "Get mailed a check for a percentage of what you spend in the store" or something along those lines. Can't be a marketing ploy right?

Although I will say I like Costco better than Sam's Club, but that's just me. ;)

great story .my best to you both . i wish my first 2 log books did not go in to the wind with my father

I'm assuming Costco is like Sam's club??? I've never been in one let alone seen one.

Yep. About the same thing, only more Yuppies go to COSTCO :).

Way to go, Saddletramp. It sounds like you and your wife have found something to enjoy in your empty nest years.
