He, that's cool. Maybe NTTA translates to 'boat' or 'seaman' or that ilk.

There's a novel set in Finland, or around Helsinki Finland about a woman who takes in a Suomi child from her neighbor that has been mistreated. I can't recall the title or the rest of the plot but it was a great book, and rather sad all around but pretty interesting. It's kind of a spy/thriller novel. If anyone remembers it, please let me know. I'd like to read it again. Circa mid/late 90s?

Not entirely correct, the ja-ending can't really be translated 100% into an english suffix. For example, Baker in finnish would be "leipuri", cooper would be "tynnyrintekijä" where "tekijä" means "maker", barrelmaker directly translated back to English. Most of the time there's no way to really translate finnish surnames into anything.
Your surname is very old, there hasn't been a W in atleast a few hundred years in common language. Used to be, but not anymore. You only see those in surnames that have lived on abroad, in Finland it would have been refinlandized about 50 years ago. Most that share your surname now spell it with a V, Vanttaja.

Wanttaja doesn't really mean anything in Finnish, the "doer" would mean you would do "wantta", which doesn't mean anything.

Maybe it means skilled doer of nothing? (I'm pretty sure Ron doesn't fit that description but I have know some over the years...) :D

No it doesn't :)

I'm guessing the origin for that name is from anywhere between late 1500's to early 1800's, when the Agricolaean(I think that's how you write it, after Mikael Agricola) spelling was more commonplace. It's definitely Finnish, not Swedish nor Russian, nor Finlandized Russian/Swedish. Old Finnish names don't really mean anything, they can be (and I think Wanttaja is too) named after a house where the family lived, or a known place, or something like that.
"doer" surnames are pretty rare there.

Today in Finland that surname would either be Vanttaja, or Vänttäjä, neither really meaning anything apart from being a name.
