I had a Mooney F model and purchased several speed mods to put on my aircraft. The aircraft was demolished before the mods were put on. How can I sell these mods since an STC is for a specific airplane?

It depends.... Some STC's are N number specific, and some are not. Also, you can get a release or new stc from the holder of the STC.

You can't..
the only people who can use them are like STC owners as replacement parts.

so....which ones are "not" N number specific?

All of them, the aircraft's registration number can be changed at any time using FAA form 8050-64. However, they can be make/model/serial number specific such as one-time STCs. These will state right on the FAA STC certificate which aircraft it can be installed on.

The Letter of Authorization (LOA), issued by the STC holder to the equipment purchaser, MAY BE issued to a specific make/model/serial number of airplane. If that's the case then one needs to make sure the STC holder will provide a new one to the next purchaser.

Some LOAs are nothing but a document posted on a website by the STC holder and you fill it in yourself, saving them the hassle. Some are a completed document with a very vauge general statement saying if you own the equiopment you have authorization to use the STC (and no make/model/serial blocks or stamps on it).

Have you considered contacting the STC holder and ask what options they may give you?

Here's the regulation that requires the STC holder to provide specific permission, usually done with a raised seal and assignment of the STC to a specific airframe. Parts is parts but to legally install them the buyer will need a new "permission" form. Some STC holders charge a small paperwork fee, some charge a much bigger fee.

§ 21.120 Responsibility of supplemental type certificate holders to provide written permission for alterations.
A supplemental type certificate holder who allows a person to use the supplemental type certificate to alter an aircraft, aircraft engine, or propeller must provide that person with written permission acceptable to the FAA.

Most holders of a STC will when informed the STC and the parts were never installed will allow these parts to be installed on a different N number with a new set of paper work.
will they charge for that?? who knows.

he's at the mercy of the STC holder.....some, like Garmin, are very uncooperative.

In what way is Garmin uncooperative? As far as I know, Garmin has open STC permission letters for the bulk of their equipment, tucked into the installation manuals.

try and get one for a GTX330ES.....I'd love to be wrong. But, my understanding is only a Garmin dealer gets those privileges.

....and just cause there is a copy of the STC doesn't mean you have a permission letter to use it.

Many companies such as Whelen have their STC and applicable aircraft list on their web page ready for free down load, they want their products on your aircraft. Others such as my C182 gross wt increase are issued to a specific aircraft. The only tangible thing you get is the flight manual supplement, and even that is a down load, but well worth the $750 cost. JMO

Sell them for cash, as-is, no warranty for usability.

Selling stuff with 8130's happens, but that only certifies the acceptable working order of the thing, not that the use of such item will be acceptable and/or conforming in your installation.

As to @Tom-D and his blanket "you can't": I can sell a plane to someone with no certificate at all, or lacking the minimum experience to be insured while flying it. Why is selling a part without knowing the intended use more restrictive in your opinion?

Thanks everyone. I will contact the STC originator and see what is required.
Contact your IA they should know what is required. Or call me I'll do your paper work. PM me for number.
