Homemade AC

A little over a week ago I built a homemade AC for my Mooney. With the temperature at 95°F it kept it comfortable inside the cabin on the ground through run-up, take off, and climb. Once up at 11,500' I turned it off.

Never understood, in these times, why the Chinese etc have not come out with a tiny inexpensive, mass produced 'freon' air conditioner for us yet.

There are a lot of different ways to do it. I chose to make it a little more involved but if you are looking for a very simple one this video can give you some ideas.

Very nice. I made one a few years ago for the 310 (now 414) and it really works quite well. Since most FBOs have ice machines, it makes refilling easy.

Never underestimate the power of duct tape...

I had considered going to see my folks in Phoenix this weekend but decided to pass on it. My dad had said "I don't know why you would come this weekend, if I didn't live here I wouldn't be here either." Instead I went to church in the morning, came home to my air conditioned house, popped some popcorn, and watched the end of the PGA Traveler's Championship.

Never understood, in these times, why the Chinese etc have not come out with a tiny inexpensive, mass produced 'freon' air conditioner for us yet.

One problem is you have to have a way to get rid of the waste heat. A friend of mine worked at a place that did stuff for the Military and he would borrow a cooling vest from work which had a power unit/heat exchanger that cooled liquid to run through the vest and kicked out hot air, making the rest of us in the plane warmer. It was also a massive power suck as I recall.
