I need to get serious.
We have been down here since last Saturday. Last week we were staying in Sayulita, North of Puerto Vallarta, and using that as a base of operations for our surfing excursion. We caught some good breaks all week, and the only day that we didn't surf was last Monday. We turned in our boards yesterday, took our friends who came down here with us to the airport so that they could go home, then came up here to Los Ayala for a week of rest and recuperation. At my age, I need some time to mend. We had a great time, but I took a pounding. I was riding out a wave on Thursday, and another came in behind me and I lost my footing, fell backward on my shoulders, then rode the second one in on my back. I went back out on Friday, so it isn't that bad, but it stiffens up pretty quick. So we might go back down to Sayulita later this week, and ride some waves before we come home, but then maybe not. OK, I was going to write a big report here, but the wife is ready to go over to Rincon de Guyabitos right now, so I'll be back later. We have internet here in Los Ayala, which is incredible considering they barely have running water here. Hasta luego.

Buen viaje! Can't figure out how to make those upside down exclamation points...

And boonas deeous to joo too.

Dear Mr. Mosbey, et. al.:

Your recent missive has been reviewed and your present conditions are duly noted. In short, one can only conclude that: you suck.

Thank you for your time and interest in this matter. If your conditions change in the near future, please do not hesitate to submit further reports.

With finest regards,

/s/ DD

P.S. It was 50 F here today with a stiff breeze out of the north. I did a touch-n-go and a full stop then drained the oil. Tomorrow I will clean up the mess, install a new filter, and fill the crankcase. OBTW, you still suck.:D

Ok but hows the skiing?

I thought so...

Well, it is a little cold here today. I watched the weather, and it said that it is only 75 degrees. It also said "feels like 77." Is that the wind chill? I guess that must be the heat index. The water temp is 74 degrees.

Next month it's Cancun for us. All my previous visits to Mexico have been on the west coast. Don't drink all the cervezas before we get there. :D

For some reason, we have been on a rum and mango juice kick. Also rum and pineapple juice.

Guess the cold weather is what has ya drinkin' the rum rather than the cerveza. Well, you'll just have to muddle through and do the best ya can with what ya got. Of course there is always Costa Rica for next year and points further south if that's still too chilly for ya!

For sure fire warm weather there is a little island off the Venezuelan coast called Margarita. Ya might want to check it out some time. The surfing sucks but the cerveza is muy fria and plenty cheap.

Suckah!

Last time I was in Mexico was 1989. I got sick and swore I'd never go back, and I haven't. The country, IMHO, is a spithole. Corrupt, poverty-stricken, and crime-ridden. Polluted to the gills. And don't blame Maquiladoras -- there aren't any in Mexico City.

Ugh. No way, Jose.

Wow, I come down here a couple of times a year and have for decades, and I didn't know all of that. I guess I'll have to quit coming down here. My wife will be disappointed, we were going to stay here a month next year. Do you think that I should quit drinking the tap water for the rest of the week?

Too bad for those experience, Flyer; Mexico has always been a top destination for us (we have inevitable ties to Mexico - heck, where I sit used to *be* Mexico), and we have always had outstanding good fortune in Mexican travels.

So one time we flew out of Minneapolis. The night before, we went to the Mall of America, and I ate a sausage and mushroom pizza at Pizza Hut. My wife commented on how filthy the place was, but I was hungry. Later that night, I got so sick I thought that I was going to die. I could barely make it on the plane the next morning. The only thing that kept me going was the thought of dying in the cold wastes of Minneapolis. I got to Mexico, started to feel a little better, and after a couple of days I was back to normal. Using your logic, I would never go to Minnesota again, and I would never eat a Pizza Hut pizza. Does that sound right? I'm just trying to understand your thinking process.

Mexico is a third world country. Precautions for diet and sanitary habits are de rigeur. Many parts of it are poor beyond the imagination of anyone raised in the industrial western world. That said, many Americans are culturally illiterate, and don't understand and don't want to understand how other cultures function.

Me, I took a 6 week hiatus from Science in my late twenties and toured throughout Mexico on a motorcycle and on the bus. I got rained out a bunch of times, and found out how wonderfully hospitable the Mexican people can be. I saw grinding poverty and soaring culture, and had one of the best times of my life. If I had the money I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I guess that I don't know what you consider a third world county. I sort of long for the good old days. I remember that my grandmother baked cakes in her home and sold them to people. The milkman used to deliver a couple of bottles of milk a couple of times a week. We used to run over to the 9th Street Grocery to get a bottle of pop. I find that kind of life here where we are now.I got up this morning and walked down the beach. I bought a couple of bananas, an avocado, and a pastry they call a concha. That, along with some mango juice and rum was breakfast. Just around 11:00 a young lady came by and had a truck load of baked goods. I bought a freshly baked loaf of bread, and some muffins for breakfast tomorrow morning. I toasted a couple of pieces of that fresh bread and spread it with butter and strawberry jam, and had it for lunch. I had a glass of pineapple juice and rum to wash it down. In a few minutes, I'm going down to the beach to take a swim, then I'm going to walk downtown to see what is going on at the cantina. I'm not sure that when you use the term "third world country", that is what people visualize. Yes, this town is a little "dirty" for some people. The streets are sand, there are no sidewalks, there isn't much for streetlights after you get a block from downtown. My feet are always covered with dirt, because I don't wear shoes here. That does not bother me. It is a cash economy here. No plastic, no dollars, no traveler's checks, but I can get along all day long with just a pocket full of change. My passport is back at my place, no one really cares where I'm from. Everyone smiles at me, and says something when I pass. My wife was sitting here in the shade reading. She said that it was a little chilly in the shade, so she walked out in the sun. It is that simple. There is no road rage. No one getting all bent our of shape over nothing. If you are driving down the street, some of which are only wide enough for one car, people will take their turn going through. They will back up to let you through if you look like you don't know what your are doing, and they will smile and wave when you finally get by. I feel good here. If this is "third world", I wish the whole world was "third world". I know one thing, I will live out the rest of my life here some day, and I'm glad that there are some people who won't.

Get out a little more. There is poverty like you have never witnessed, but not in the main tourist areas. There is also iron will, pride, and heroic family values. Where you are is very nice, though.

OK, I'll try to get out of the tourist area a little more.

I'm back, and nothing bad happend to me. We spent the last night in Puerto Vallarta. I hate trying to come down from Los Ayala, turn in the rental car, find a taxi to the airport, then try to get the timing down for everything. Not to mention that everyone tries to get out of Mexico on Saturdays for some reason. So we drove down on Saturday, the 13th, not last Saturday, turned in the car, and went downtown to the Rosita Hotel. Not a 5 star, but it is pretty clean, it is right downtown, and we only stay there one night. The next day we had a nice breakfast then made our way to the airport. The flights were uneventful, and so now we are back at home planning for next year. We will probably go down again between now and then, but that will be more of a situation where we will just take advantage of some sort of deal we come up with. Some year, we hope to go down after Christmas, and just stay there all winter, but that is a couple of years yet.
