Hey TV Nerds, How do I update Netflix?

I have 2 TVs that stream netflix.
One is on an LG blu ray player that I really like but the Netflix Menu is useless.

There is no search feature, just: My Queue, Popular, Drama, etc
I have to go to my computer load netflix, search for a movie, add it to my queue to search. Then I have to go back to the TV and it will be in my queue. PITA

There is no option anywhere for searching and I find this version has about 1/4 the movies in each category as the other TV

My other TV uses Roku and has a search bar where I can type what I want and I don't have to go shove things into my queue to find them

It also has so many more movies / shows and even has sub categories. Like I can choose Horror and then "B horror movies"

How do I get Netflix updated on the first TV? I checked and there are no firmware updates available for the player.

Thoughts?

If the player doesn't have any firmware updates, you're not going to get any new features. By the way, each device manufacturer creates their own interface for the NetFlix app. It looks different on the NetFlix site, Roku, iOS, AppleTV, Android, etc.

Cheapest way to get the newest features is to get an AppleTV or Roku 3 for your system, and use it instead of the LG BluRay player to stream NetFlix.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

I don't know what you are talking about anyway, I think one of the um neighbors typed that and I was accidentally on their WiFi connection or something. It is pretty technical but a real glitch. Happens all the time.
 
Call your TV manufacturer and *****. :rofl: Seriously though, that end of the industry is still in it's infancy, they need your input.

The other option is to use the TV as a monitor and stream Netflix through your iPad. Netflix is my only 'TV' option outside YouTube (YouTube actually has more really interesting stuff, it's not just cute cat and stupid human trick videos, there are some great university lecture series available that would cost $100k in tuition to get just a fraction of what's available) and I just use my iPad or Sony Vaio to watch. I haven't owned a TV in over a decade.

+1 to Apple TV.

As much as folks like to ***** about Apple, that is one product they got right.
 
Buy another RoKu 3 & use it instead of the LG. Not likely that LG is going to update that box.

RoKu 3s are cheap on Woot.

This was his BluRay player that has the embedded NetFlix player, not his TV. Though LG makes both TVs and BluRay players, so point is still valid.

And for that, he'd need the Apple TV device so he can AirPlay content to the TV.
 
Or Google Chromecast. Same ideas as the Roku Stick.

These are options if you have an empty HDMI port on your TV.

My Roku stick lets me stream youtube to the TV and it lets me type searches which is a nice feature.

If I could have somehow upgraded the menu on the blu ray it would have been cool but I think I will add another Roku upstairs

Do I get anything more by getting the Roku3 over the stick?
 
Another vote for buy another Roku. Naked City rocks, BTW.

I just don't get buying something else when I have something that does just fine and serves other purposes as well.:dunno:

I have added Chromecast to all of my tvs. I love it. They're around $30 now

If it's one of the LG's that phones-home to them with everything you watch, then they already know.... :rolleyes:
 
I'm localish and have a Roku XD that I'd let you have. That's not much cheaper that a new model, but you're welcome to it.

They have an app for that.

My DVD player is the same....no search feature. The kids Wii has a search feature.

You can add movies to your queue through your phone while sitting in bed.

BTW....strippers vs werewolves is awesome!!! Almost as good a Sharknado!!:D
 
Hands down the best thing on netflix if you can find it is
"zombie ass, toilet of the dead"

It is all in Japanese but it is b-move gold
 
JUst saw this thread and i'd echo most of the comments. Until last month, i could only watch Netflix off of an app on my DVD/Blu-Ray player, which never updated its interface. As a result, while i could stream movies to my TV, i could never turn on sub-titles which Mia prefers. Bought a new Smart TV last month which has Netflix embedded with newer software and an interface that gives me more options. then, my Apple Express, the small wireless router that i use to stream music to my amplifier, died, so i bought an Apple TV. now i have three devices for Netflix. I prefer the Smart TV version though.

So, yes buy any new device that provides Netflix.

And, oh, the reason i wandered away from Android devices was the same problem you're having with Netflix. while Google continues to update the Android system, phone providers rarely provide those updates to you, so for each Android phone i owned, the Android version that came with it was locked in for the life of the phone. With an iPhone, i'm always up to date.

Anyway, i hope you're able to find a best solution because netflix rocks.

I am just going to add another roku upstairs. I think I will get the better one (Roku3) it is not much more money but it says it is faster. The streaming stick one is slooooooooooow

Upstairs is where I want everything to be the best since it is a dedicated theater
Downstairs, I just have a 720p DLP that is 10 years old and it tends to just be kids shows.
 
Use your computer or Ipad to search, then put those titles in your queue.

Wise choice.

I just canceled Netflix after many years being a happy customer.

I just switched to Dish TV....and with my 18 room Estate...3 Hoppers...10 Super Joeys...rest little Joeys....I don't have time to watch Netflix when pausing live TV and going to next room like they do on the commercials!!:D:rolleyes2:

Ok...ok..ok....my "Estate" isn't that big....but with all the new choices I have...I saved that 7.99 for a quart of oil!!!:yes:

I'm pretty sure. The second picture Bryan posted looks exactly like every Samsung Netflix interface I've ever seen (including the one on my Blu-Ray player).

Roku's interface is dominated by a large ad for whatever channel they're pushing on the right-hand side, an annoying "feature" that the Samsung interface does not have. Roku does have a search function, but it returns a maximum of 50 results, compared to Samsung's 75. Roku also has a rather hideous slider type browse function, as opposed to Samsung's much clearer grid layout; and Roku's category-based browsing only returns 50 results, compared to Samsung's 75.

The above reasons are why I use my Samsung Blu-Ray player to play Netflix while I have a Roku player collecting dust in the cabinet. The Samsung's streaming interface is better in every way than Roku's.

Tonight we watched "Tombstone" up stairs and at first I came to my PC to put it in my instant watch list.

Then I go upstairs and cant find it because that particular instance of netflix was setup 2 years ago before Netflix created separate queues for different users.

So Mrs. 6PC goes downstairs, logs on to her machine and puts it into her queue
to get it to show up on that player.

Then back to the media room which now has it in the queue.

I guess what irritates me is it was a pricey blu-ray player with built in WiFi and a 1 TB harddrive but the least flexible menu of all my devices.

Agree frustrating....just because it is Netflix ready....doesn't mean it's ready to do Netflix in a user friendly enviornment.

In a perfect world....Netflix should only allow their product to be licensed with all features installed....sadly Netflix chose profit over common sense....kinda why there shares are in the toilet
 
By the way I think not only did Val Kilmer do an outstanding job as Doc Holiday in Tombstone, but I think that is one of the top x best characters portrayed in a movie ever. The acting in that film is top notch all around.
 
This is what comes when the business model is to make the most money rather than the best product. It's so frustrating because every bloody product has something they saved money on to be competitively priced with the other unit that saved money on something else. The good hardware comes with the cheap software and the good software comes with the cheap hardware. It never ceases to **** me off that I can never get exactly what I want, they come so close but leave out one feature that cuts out 30% of its utility to me.

You can get what you want if you are an informed buyer.

Fact is...Netflix has several options for a search feature depending on the product you buy. But not all.

For those products that don't have search feature...a small workaround either by PC or an App on a phone can be used. At most it takes 5 mins or less of your time...but I guess we will whine about anything given the opportunity.:mad2:

No, I can't, I have to build many things from scratch, or buy multiple items and cobble them together to do what I need. It's not just TVs and electronics, it's everything, cars, houses... always corners cut.
 
Good video (or audio) podcast called "CordKillers" all about cutting the cord. Used to be called "Framerate".

One segment focuses on news about the various set top boxes.

Also good for "discovery".

We cut the cord by ditching DishNetwork almost 2 years ago.

We are happy with our AppleTV. Have a Roku and Chromecast as well, but 95% of our watching is via the AppleTV. Mostly podcasts, NetFlix, Hulu+, YouTube and Amazon Prime streaming. Miss the NFL a bit, but never without something to watch.

For example, last night watched an episode of Community (great show) on Hulu+ and an episode of Manhattan - an OK dramatization about the development of the atomic bomb. Night before we caught up on the latest Gray's Anatomy and Scandal via Hulu+.

Not too long ago, enjoyed "Transparent", an Amazon original.

Our Vizio TV has a lot of stuff built in, but the interface, for the most part, is horrible.
