Curious. How many of you have learned anything useful as a pilot here that you otherwise did not know or would never tried.

I don't mean FAA rules or what to log and when. I'm talking about flying techniques and tricks. New way of performing some procedures or testing some flying mode that you haven't considered?

Personally, i find this forum to be very useful in learning stuff. Stuff that CFI/II have not taught or showed me and I would not have even considered before.

I definitely have learned some things. I have especially found it useful to hear what the ATC people who are also pilots have to say.

Been flying 41+ years, made it to airlines, and prior ATC. But, I have learned quite a few things since being on POA. I hope whoever clicks your second choice, 'knows it all', comments on why. One never stops learning. When you begin to think you know it all, BOOM, reality occurs.

Tom-D's suggestions for priming/starting is saving my PA28 starter. That's just one in the past week or so.

Yes, but not recently. The usefulness of POA has gone way downhill ever since Tom and Glenn started pizzing on each other.

I was about to say the same thing or something similar. It's like:
"I'm the best A&P."
"No, I am!"
"You're a doodyhead!"
"I know you are but what am I?"

I've learned how to re-clock my turn and bank indicator.
I've learned that there are several Arizona pilots and mechanics that I want to meet someday.
I've learned to that matter how well or nice you say or explain something, someone will take it the wrong way.

I agree, although I wouldn't single Tom and Glenn out in the cause for the downhill trend. It seems like there are a lot of prominent posters that have taken up an "I'm right and if you don't do it the way I do it you're not doing it right" kind of attitude lately.

I've learned stuff on here and continue to learn. If I wasn't learning I wouldn't continue to read the forums. But I feel the rate of learning has went down lately.

No kidding. Admittedly, I'm not the most articulate writer but it amazes me how many people here will twist what is written into meaning something totally different than what is intended.

I learned how to make cole slaw on the POA.

I've seen some amazing booby pics posted by mscard. :D

Reminds me of a great line by Hugh Laurie in his role of House:

"Well, I gotta go. There's a lot of porn piling up on the internet...and it's not going to download itself!"

I have learned to fly with more that two people in the plane. I mean with two people, one passes gas, everyone knows who is responsible.....

Wait can you share this tip?

As a newbie, I learn a lot from ATC comm to stall recovery. However I am older than some trees around here, so I am able to filter out not so non-learnable (is that a word?) Verbiage

Gosh darn it, I misread one of the links, thought they said "dripping FIRE", when they had really talked about dripping fuel.

So I prepared this excellently created image, then looked for the post, and dang it, I screwed up.

I hate to let a perfectly good joke go to waste, so please pretend somebody said "dripping fire", and I say...

"Dripping fire?!?! Who was flying that plane?!?!? Nicholas Cage???"

...and hilarity should ensue, if not, please prime for an additional minute.

I learned that no matter your budget, you should always buy a Gulfstream or equivalent as your first plane, because it costs more to upgrade later.

How to land a Cirrus and actually be able to reuse it, thanks 6PC !!

I've learned quite a bit. I really can't recall what, but I know I've picked up quite a bit over the years.

I've only been on here a few short weeks, but in all seriousness I've actually found a plethora of useful information, met some folks I had no idea were in my backyard, figured out a plan for my mission, found some good places to try flying to, and learned some new stuff about the cockpit I've never heard of before.

In my opinion... All useful.

Nice to know there's a "forum" out there for pilots to talk about "whatever"

Well, someone did know everything! There is 1 "No" vote. I was beginning to be confused.

I've learned many things here and on other online forums. Especially things that have made me a better instructor.

Learned about aoa, chutes. And to not take personal comments to heart.

I've learned a lot of things watching threads here. Also immersing by reading here helps cement things I "know" but have only just learned. There is a lot to learn in ground school, and it helps a lot to keep reading the points to get them to stick.

Maybe especially since I am an American living in Norway, even though I have learned Norwegian it is not my native language and though Norwegian pilots are the same in that way all pilots are when hanging out, it IS nice for me to hang out with pilots in a virtual flight lounge/hanger and in Norwegian I still can miss nuances, where in English (American English) I catch a lot more. So it is this too that is so helpful for me. We Americans are a little different also in attitudes and what and how we share information, or argue :) or state things. Even after 24 years here, I'm still American. This is more what I am used to.

Also have started a number of threads with specific questions about things I am iffy on, and received great help here and some members here have a way with words that helped me grasp things I was trying to understand. I am very glad to have found this forum.

The negatives, a lot of ****ing contests, but those too can be instructive. I never automatically take things here as gospel and if it seems to contradict my limited knowledge, I ask for more explanation but also talk with my CFI and take his word as final.

The one thing that continues to amaze me, the many concepts or rules, or standards that I naively thought would be un debatable, turns out aren't so straightforward. Even what I would have thought to be basic, like which lights on the aircraft one uses at different phases of flight and conditions. Or a good deal of procedures like use of checklists.

As a long time guitarist that has spent a lot of time on a guitar/music forum, I shouldn't be surprised as forums generally are like this.

I always have had a healthy respect for pilots and the knowledge, skill, and abilities but that has gone through the roof as I try to learn to fly. The range of things I'm learning, or trying to learn well, just upped the estimation.

I also am grateful for all the kind and helpful attitudes I have met here. Newbies like me can be a PITA and we often ask the same things (even though I do use searches to investigate topics, there are times I want to ask a specific thing in a certain way to understand it better) and there is a lot of patience and good responses from pilots I am very sure are expert and excellent pilots.

So, thanks to all of you. I have learned a to so far here, and will continue to.
