I can feel this dude's pain... That jet is at least 50k in parts and labor.

Yeah, and what a weird flight regime to break up in. Unlikely he can point to anything but a mistake in building for that one. Wouldn't think there would be enough flight induced stress to break structural materials.
 
Looks like he over stressed the vertical stabilizer it broke when he went full deflection on the rudder.

Looks like he was trying to do a photo pass for the crowd. Only thing I can think of is a stress fracture in the joint that let loose. I would want to think that, at this scale, the guy building it had good experience and building methods.

I wonder what powers the jet. I'm leaning towards a small used APU unit out of some small jet or helicopter.

They make RC jet engines. Turbines too.

In any case, it wasn't built nearly strong enough. Probably should have gone for fiberglass shell vs. balsa stick construction.

I mean, it was clearly made from balsa wood.
 
I see the vstab come away at 1:49 but what the heck happens after that? Not just a violent CFT (come from together) which is surprising in itself, but an instantaneous CFT! (I would have expected a flip over and nosedive with the most of the ship still intact.

I'm right there with you man - the stab comes off, then BAM! I guess I'm underestimating the overall forces on these things.
 
Looks kinda like some have opined, the vertical stab departed and the disintegration may have been from it being built really really light -- the announcer did say it was amazing how slow it could fly at that size. Under built?

Kinda made the whole "both the pilot and the aircraft are certified and it takes lots of steps" announcement look pretty silly too.

Bummer for the dude. That wasn't cheap.
 
Yes... ouch..... sorta like building a new race car and getting slammed from the rear on the pace lap...

I don't think so, the fuselage portion where the engine would be located was mostly intact. I think it was just inadequately stout construction for the service. Formed FRP would have worked much better than covered balsa frame for something that fast and heavy.
