GPS Track or Compass?

"""fairly constant adjusting??"

That's a matter of semantics, every 15 minutes could be considered "fairly constant adjusting" and that is far from unusual with a regular vacuum DG, and that's all these are, a vacuum DG with OBS & GS.

Amen.

They want to know the heading you will initially fly to go to Copperhill. If that is your heading for track, or not, they could not care less.

And they will probably be fine with it if you say "northeast" rather than 050 or whatever.

My HSI, like most, is slaved to a flux gate which keeps the thing correct. I check it against my compass when I'm either sitting still or in straight and level flight and it's typically within a few degrees and that is fine.

HSIs run on PFM, so maybe ask an avionics tech to have a look at the PFM box.

Most yes, but the Century NSD-360 is not rare to come across. $10,000+ cheaper than the King KCS-55 system.

That's a new one to me.

I've been known to tell them I'm going to "head up towards Laramie and then hang a left at the state line" and they've been good with it. :D

Ok, I know this is a 5 month old thread, but I recently ran into a situation or two that confuses/irritates me.

I had a panel mount compass and an old DG that precessed horribly (or at least that's my thought, now I'm not so sure).

So, I bought a new DG and just because, I bought a new compass as well. Figured, might as well start fresh.

Issue 1:
I was flying a few months ago and I had synced up my compass and my DG as usual. Of course, my GPS track was not even close. Like 20 degrees off. ATC called me a few times to verify my heading, which I confirmed based on the compass and DG. They commented "wow the winds must be high up there", uh..no they weren't, but I suppose that was in reference to my ground track being so far off from my heading.

Issue 2:
The DG almost NEVER matches the compass after a few minutes. The shop that put it in swears they calibrated it, maybe not, but here's the thing. If setup my DG to sync with the GPS, it's dead on..like SOLID DEAD on maybe off by a few degrees like it should be with the compass.

I don't know about everyone else, but why I fly, I am not interested in fiddling with the @#$! DG every 5 seconds to match the frickin' compass.

So maybe the original DG was just fine and the original compass as well? If so, that was a costly replacement...

Some notes:

1 - Before syncing the compass and the DG, I am ALWAYS wings level, no crab, straight and level, no power changes.
2 - I can turn 90 degrees and while the DG reads that, the compass is always off..ALWAYS. It was the same way before too.
3 - If I sync the DG to the GPS, I'm dead on, there are some changes I need to make every so often but no where near the frequency with the compass.

It's just FRUSTRATING. And lastly, I get a constant 4.7 HG vacuum at cruise, so I know that's not the problem.
