Gas can truth

You guys sure do get unhappy over trivial things. When I need a gas can I'm not all that picky. I live much of my life out of fuel drums and 5 gallon jugs. Personally I prefer 15s when I can use them. That's what I haul fuel with in the plane. I have 12 to transport as soon as I get home. All have vents and fast flow outlets. In some cases I may transfer to smaller jugs for things like boats and chainsaws. Safety nozzle or not? I can deal with either and do it regularly. I suppose I could throw a tantrum and hold my breath until I turned blue while resisting the safety jugs but it seems counterproductive. I just want to fuel the boat and go fishing. So far I've been able to do so. They work. Good enough for me. And now back to the all-too-regular programming....

There are two different issues here. Trying to fill are a car/boat/plane tank? You need to modify that cheap Blitz POS or buy a Tuff Jug. Trying to fill a small tank on a piece of yard equipment? You need what No Spill Jill is hawking.

That does look pretty slick! Do you have one? Just curious about the quality. I'm pretty suspicious of things made of plastic. They look perfect for filling my portable generators. However, it looks like the spout has to be straight up and down to work, so filling cars and boats it would be of little value.
 
I find this dastardly pleasure in splashing a bit towards the earth gods.....with each petro fill.

I just bought two of these (20), I have a lot of the old style (self-venting) 5 gallon blitz jugs that I use for my equipment and plane. This should speed up the process of fueling everything nicely.

However...

The nice part about the self-venting nozzles is that once the plane's tank got full, the flow automatically stopped since the tip of the nozzle was under the fuel level* and the jug could no longer "breathe". That was a nice safety feature that will be eliminated...but I guess I can always leave the vent snapped shut on just the last 5 gallons.

*I put a funnel in the plane's filler neck; lay a damp towel on the wing that contacts the funnel and the neck; and then set the 5 gallon can on the towel and tip it over into the funnel. The nozzle winds up laying at the bottom of the funnel. The nozzle flush with, or just below, the top of the plane's filler neck. The funnel serves no purpose except to catch fuel as I'm tipping the 5 gallon can.

I must admit that I love that "feature". It means that I only have to really manually control the process by hand for the last 5 gallons or so. If the vent seals up well you should be able to just shut the vent. Watch it on your first try and see if it stops flowing with the vent shut.
 
I would love to see the EPA regs adjusted to go back to an old style fuel can. I've never seen so much fuel spilled with some of the 'newer' regulated spouts.

Those that regulate never use them. Mine are all older or 'modified'. The favorites are decades old that have a pour spout with an air vent in back, dirt simple, never spill a drop.
 
The idea in the article about creating "water cans" with the old features is not a bad idea.

FYI - I fix this by using rubber hose, which allows the air in.
 
Those replacement spouts sold by Amazon, Tractors Supply and a few others is an option with older cans. I re-spouted a few that others threw out.

I think just about all the new ones have different size thread mandated. I know those spouts don't fit all cans.
 
Got sick of the cans to so just got a 100gallon better built tank on sale at fleet farm for $319.

Northern took has $50 off over $250 purchase and $20 off over 100, for folks on there mailing list, so I was able to get a top of the line 15gpm fill-rite pump, fuel flow meter and tank all in for about $900.

Between the plane and boat (marina gas prices) it will pay for itself in a summer.
