So used prices on the old non-Xi units will be dropping like a rock now?

Well they surely didn’t want to get stuck with a bunch of GTNs on the shelf they would have to discount while customers waited out the new unitWish I would’ve known this was coming out in Jan. Just installed my 650 in Nov.

Whatever the reasons 9 years ago, I suspect that it's too late to build such a thing now. It would cannibalize the GTN market and I don't know whether they have any motivation to fight on Avidyne's terms. Why doesn't Garmin build a slide-in GNS replacement a la Avidyne? Avidyne managed to take the Garmin pinouts and incorporate features that the GNS doesn't have, like enhanced weather and traffic displays from external units, e.g. the NGT-9000, as well as play nice G5s and legacy APs.
Supposedly if within 45 days, you can upgrade for $500. I would call your avionics shop tomorrow and inquire about upgrading.Wish I would’ve known this was coming out in Jan. Just installed my 650 in Nov.k
November was 39 days ago. That's cutting it close!Supposedly if within 45 days, you can upgrade for $500. I would call your avionics shop tomorrow and inquire about upgrading.
So basically the same thing with different screen and processer, got it.
What features would you engineer into a true refresh product? How long will this go before a true refresh product is engineered?

That’s why I said to call tomorrow...let the avionics shop do the math, obviously it’s in their best interest to get you to upgrade. I was able to get a rebate when past the date because I talk to avionics shop. If you don’t ask...November was 39 days ago. That's cutting it close!
And Connext still requires a FS510 rather than making it a built-in/standard feature. It’s not my burden to define what’s needed in a new product. It’s simply with the advances in technology, a 10-year old high-tech product, that’s still considered “the new one” is sad.

Yeah I don’t get this one. They should’ve built it into the unit like the 175/355/375 navigators

Not an issue. On the GTN, you don't need to use the touchscreen to tune and swap frequencies (com and nav) or select and activate a direct-to waypoint, for example. When do choose to use the touchscreen, just anchor your pinky to the panel first and then it's no big deal. They still have the touch screens. Work great until you are in turbulence. Then, good luck touching the screen in the right place. I love the old 430W in the club's 172N.

I installed a 430W and before I picked it up Garmin announced the 650/750 series! So, I feel your pain!Wish I would’ve known this was coming out in Jan. Just installed my 650 in Nov.

If I were a praying man, my prayer every night would be "please, lord, never make me go back to choosing waypoints with knobs, one letter at a time."I've never understood this. I've been in gnarly turbulence and operated a 650 just fine, while hand flying to soften the bumps. The knob and buttonology of the 430 makes it still slower, even when you make touchscreen mistakes.
I had one of the original Apollo LORAN units, you had to slew in the lat/long, using +/- and if you got it going too fast, it would blow right past the number and then you went the other way! I had t select the right LORAN chain too! I was never completely sure if I was going where I wanted to go!!If I were a praying man, my prayer every night would be "please, lord, never make me go back to choosing waypoints with knobs, one letter at a time."
It all makes the ADF look so easy, doesn't it? Tune in the frequency once, then the needle is just pointing at the transmission tower for the rest of the time you're navigating with NDB (well, ±10°, but close enough ).I had one of the original Apollo LORAN units, you had to slew in the lat/long, using +/- and if you got it going too fast, it would blow right past the number and then you went the other way! Any idea where this rumor originated?
I sent an email to Garmin the day of the announcement explaining I just installed 650. Garmin replies and asked me to call them to discuss my options. It really turns out I don’t have any options.
I spoke with Garmin and they said they don’t have any policies yet on trade ups. They told me to contact my Garmin dealer and see if he can do anything like take it as a return.
The call to Garmin was useless and a waste of time.

My understanding was this was only for dealers who had ordered and received a GTN that had not yet been sold to a customer, I assume meaning not yet paid for and picked up. In other words this was only for new, rather than used (if only briefly) GTNs.
