I've been using both pads for years now. The text pad a running list of squawks written in flight... Never erased.
The scratch pad for clearances. I use a dual purpose pen and rubber tipped stylus to write. My writing is just good enough to get the job done. At uncontrolled airports the clearance is captured during the climb. Everything else gets 'written' on the radios, navigator or EFIS. No paper on board, only the backup pen which will work on my hand if required.
In pre-tablet, pre-AP days I had a highly customized kneeboard with clips and stickers covering everything needed. Since I had to fly and write and map fold and etc all at the same time, thing had to be organized with too many backup pencils. At annual time, My mechanic would always hand me a few found in the Maule's bilge along with a stern warning that it was not good to have such things floating around among the control system cables and pulleys. She would be proud of me now!
