ForeFlight 4.0 is out!

Another neat thing when searching for charts now is to specify the airport and TYPE of approach you want: "KFTW ILS" and you'll just get those.

Note "approach plates" vs. "airport diagrams". I've suggested that as well - That there be an airport-diagrams-only georeferencing option - But, not yet. I'm guessing some negotiations with Seattle Avionics need to happen first.

Not sure what you meant to say but I am wishing that I could have georeferenced airport diagrams without paying the full $75 for that plus georeferenced approach plates.
 
Quick question on flight planning - I planned a flight combining airports and user waypoints. For airports I see latest METARS, TAFS and winds aloft. I didn't get weather briefing for it. On "Maps" screen it says "Winds aloft not included in calculation". Do I have to get a briefing to include winds aloft?
Does FF gives you groundspeed on different altitude based on winds aloft?

I haven't found a way to see the legend or the other information on the outer portion of the paper maps. Does anyone know if there is another way to find this information in foreflight? I am specifically interested in the table that has the information on the restricted and prohibited areas.

You can get that information in ForeFlight 4.0 by tapping on the R/P area on the chart - See the second image from post #17 of this thread.

Give it a bit - It's got to get winds aloft information from the Internet. You may see the "sunflower" next to 3G up in the Status bar as it's trying. I'm not sure how long it tries before it gives up.

It does NOT give you a single view that shows groundspeeds at different altitudes, but if you punch in different altitudes it'll change the winds aloft calculation. It wouldn't be completely accurate yet anyway, since there's no climb/descent speed information in the aircraft profiles.

Dave,

You can change the route any time you want by either typing in a route, or using the "touch planning" features (you can hold your finger on the route line and drag it to a new waypoint, etc.)

If the clearance involves going direct to a point that's already in your flight plan, you can tap on the little arrow button next to it in the nav log and then tap "direct XXX":

Or, you can just tap the point on the map, and tap the little orange direct-to button that appears just to the left of its name in the box that comes up.

Or, you can use a combination of the techniques, whatever works best. For example, one of the more complex re-clearances I got was leaving Philadelphia for UNV, when I got "direct Pottstown Victor 12 Boyer Victor 170 Ravine Victor 276 RASHE". Had ForeFlight existed at the time, I could've just hit the "x" in the route line to get rid of the direct route I had filed, and then tapped the Pottstown VOR and hit the direct-to button to get the first leg in right away, then just typed the rest of the route in.

Hope this helps - I learned a lot about ForeFlight early on by simply planning "fantasy flights" and playing with it. You can't break it, so have fun! :yes:
 
Flew with it today, MUCH better than it was and it was damn good before!

Man it would be nice if they could trim the email briefing. I am flying within Texas, not closer than 150nm to any state border and I get pages of notams for La. and NM, weather for Indiana, Ill.
You can see why folks skim briefings these days.
 
Looking at this and I might have to break down and get an iPad. Way cool! And that $150/yr subscription is still cheaper than my Jeppesen subscription for paper.
 
I like how the "A/FD" option takes you right to the appropriate page in the AF/D. I wish it did the same for Take Off Minimums. Instead you need to page through them to get to your airport (of course, unless I'm doing something wrong).

Yup. :( I think the FAA probably doesn't want them to trim anything...

I read the briefing right in ForeFlight - At least they split it into sections so I can get what I'm really looking for and not have to read through 8,000 obstruction NOTAMs at airports I'm flying over... or "kinda near."

Nope... I'm not sure if that information is even included with the file (ie, which page xxx airport is on). I'll have to ask about that.
 
If y'all think using this is intuitive, for a PC user it's not. I went on foreflight's slight and viewed their operating manual which is in a pdf format. I can view it on line or print it. I want to save it on the I-pad. Why isn't that an option and how does one do it?
How do I close Foreflight?

While we're at it, how do I get the I-Pod manual on the I-pod? I don't see anything on it telling me how to do things.

Another way is to purchase the GoodReader app (an nice PDF/image viewer app), it has a built-in web browser where you can navigate to the PDF and save it. Because I have GoodReader, I don't use iBooks for PDF's.

EDIT - One other possibility - Kind of a kludge, but at the same time kind of cool - Look up "Bring Your Own Procedures" in the ForeFlight manual, and use that to put the manual right into ForeFlight. ;) After all, ForeFlight doesn't care if that PDF is a plate or a manual... Some people last year used the then-new BYOP functionality to load the Airventure NOTAM into ForeFlight under KOSH. Cool!

FF worked great today, I have lots of questions.

-no georef on the SID? I could see the airplane on the other charts but not the sid. And yes the airplane was definitely in an area covered by the procedure.

-how do I get the hud on the enroute charts, like it is on the approach charts?

-any way to shut off the touch screen or at least the wp/navaids etc - got way too many nuisance popups.

-no breadcrumb trail??

Sorry. I'm not getting anywhere. I tried to download Adobe pdf reader and it said it wasn't compatable. Isn't there something on my Ipad to read pdf files? I wanted to down load it on line. Seems kinna crazy I can't simply save a pdf on wifi and read it. They should put the manual on here IMO.

Nope - Can't do georef on a SID in anything, to my knowledge. Why? Well, if you look at them, every single one says "Chart not to scale." So, it's really just not possible.

You can type the SID into your route, and all the waypoints will appear and it'll plot everything on the enroute chart, so you could do that and switch back and forth to the SID plate... But no, there's no georef on SID's.

There'll be a little button in the bottom center of the display that you can tap to bring it up:

Obviously the HUD is showing here, but you see the button right in the middle of it, the down arrow pointing to a horizontal line? That's the "minimize" button, and when the HUD is "minimized" there will be a button in the same location that looks kind of like a speedometer - That's the "maximize" button for the HUD.

There's also a button in the top toolbar to show/hide the nav log - It's the one highlighted in blue at the top of the picture above.

Hmmm. Not on the maps. When you're on an approach, there is a "Lock" button in the upper-right hand corner that prevents any panning, zooming, or orientation changes. That'll keep the plate right where you want it.

Previous versions of ForeFlight had about a 1/2 second delay built into the popups on Maps. Maybe that should be brought back... Or add a preference for whether or not to delay it.

In iTunes, on the left-hand side, where it has "Library" and "Store" and "Playlists," after you hook up the iPad it should add a "Devices" section and show the iPad there.

Sorry, it looks like I didn't specify iTunes in my previous message... My bad. That's where you want to look for it.
 
Downloaded I books and synced by it isn't showing as an app on itunes on my lap top. I'm gonna have to give up for tonight. Thanks for trying. I may have to have my IT folks do this. I only have weekends to work on it.

Well, Ibooks had a free download of the Ipad user's guide; so, I'm getting that.

Hmmmm. Like I said, I don't use iBooks for PDF's... But that should work. :dunno: I'll give it a try and see if I can figure it out.

BTW, have you opened iBooks on the iPad yet?

Good! I was thinking that my method seemed awfully difficult just to get an iPad manual! ;)

They really need to do something about iTunes. It's grown a lot since it was just an MP3 player program 10 years ago, and it's gotten to the point where there's too much crap that's been added on to it, so it doesn't really make much sense any more. There should instead be an "iDesktop" app that handles all of the syncing and backup duties for all the iGadgets, and iTunes should go back to being about tunes.
 
It isn't syncing. I hit sync and it says preparing to sync step on then just quits. I'll try connecting to another USB port. This is really clunky.

On my Ipad, I show three apps. In Itunes on my laptop it only shows one. Snycing doesn't fix it. So, I can't click Ibooks on my laptop. It doesn't show it on there as a choice.

Thanks for helping Kent. I'm just not getting where I need to be and have to call it quits tonight. Maybe I'll get some time during the week.

You might mention to the Foreflight folks, an option to downloand the user's manual to the I pad would be appreciated by some. I have to have my lap top open to read a pdf or have wifi to read their manual on the Ipad. It would be nice to be able to save it to the Ipad easily when the program is installed. Some of us just don't have a lot of time to play with all this stuff.

Gaah... Sorry, my bad. iBooks doesn't show up on mine either. (I rarely plug it in to my computer). This is what I get for not upgrading to iOS 4 earlier than I did. :redface:

The good news is, it's much easier. In Safari on the iPad, navigate to the ForeFlight user manual and load it (so you're seeing it on-screen in Safari) and then just tap anywhere on it and you'll see a black bar appear with buttons for "Open in iBooks" and "Open in..." Just tap on "Open in iBooks."

Note that you may not see it at first glance - There are multiple "collections" available in iBooks, and by default they have one for "Books" (which will show up by default) and a different one for PDFs. Just tap on the "Collections" button in the upper left in iBooks and then tap "PDFs."

Kent, it's not quite so simple, at least with the iPhone. Here are some instructions which worked for me.
