Flying around Texas in early October

I'm feeling the urge to meander again. :yes: My Citabria has been down for way too many weeks and I'm feeling the need for some flying.

First planned stop will be the Fort Parker fly-in (near Groesbeck) on October 6th.

Then I may stop to see Joyce if she's home. Barb may fly down with me...if she can leave her cows long enough. Then, I'm not sure exactly where I will be headed...grass strips somewhere, I imagine. Don't know how long I will be out on 'flyabout'. Anything else going on in east/central Texas on grass strips the first part of the month?

Would someone please give me a link to that website for the Dallas Pilots? I lost it somehow.

Thanks for askin'! I miss my buddies from Texas. Haven't been down that way since my son moved to Atlanta. My local flying buddies don't fly as much and we've have fewer local flying gatherings. :(

It took awhile to recover from all that storm damage we had earlier this year. We sold the south half of the farm and don't miss it a bit...less work for us now. We still have the runways and some property south of the house. Finally talked Tom into getting a golf cart, which has helped a lot around here. We're doing a little remodeling at the hangar and the old farmhouse. Tom has been busy teaching flying, and I've been sulking around cursing the heat, the drought and having my airplane down for several weeks. We decided to skip having a fly-in at Twin Oaks again this year, but plan to have one in the spring sometime.

The runways have been very stressed out and brown, but after the recent rains, they are green and happy once again! When are you flying back up to see us?
 
Good to hear, thought for sure you had run off with the Circus. We've had a nice summer, don't think a single day has been over 112F.

October is our best month, as you know, so hope you can head this way. Bring what's-his-name along if he's willing. Glad the farm situation is happily resolved, as I know you were having some heartburn.

So I guess this means you won't be at the Fall Gastons that Lynn is organizing Oct 5 - 7. There's actually a chance we may make it to that. Glad you're out flying again!

The Dallas-area board is DFWPilots.com (as noted), but the landing page is munged-up just now. To get to the forum, you need to go to: www.DFWPilots.com/board and you're in like Flintstones.

Get on there sooner than later - maybe you might find time to visit the exceptional grass strip which Walt Meziere and his pilot-bride Rachael are fixing up - take a look at it at: www.T14airport.com - they are sure among the best airport hosts around (I assume you and Tom can top them, but I have foolishly failed to find out yet!). Walt rarely misses an excuse to have flying fun, you might motivate some gumbo-making.

That's one reason we decided not to move to Texas. :D But, after the next ice storm I'll be wishing we would have moved to Texas. :D

If we go, it will be later in October. Tom and I prefer to spend time down there when the trees are peaking...it's absolutely gorgeous at Gaston's then.

It's good to be back in the saddle. :yes: Flying commercially to OSH was not nearly as much fun this year. I even had to do my Flight Review in a different airplane this year. Those Skyhawks have too many buttons and knobs and dials. And those flaps are almost a nuisance. ;)

I had forgotten where his strip was and what the identifier was. Thanks for the info. Does he live on his airstrip now?

I am in town for the duration. My hiney still fits in Old Shiny, so we try to keep too much rust from accumulating on each other.

I'm fixin' to post on the DFW site. So far the SuperCub folks have given me some GREAT suggestions about grass strips in Texas and Oklahoma. Ranger Field (F23) is one of those suggestions...sounds like a really neat place! Any of you guys been there? I have a question about a comment I saw on Flitesoft's info about the airport. It said: PRE-DATES THE ACT. I wonder what that means?
 
I think Llano is having a fly-in / camp-in on their grass strip in October around the 19th or so. It looks like I'll have to miss it to go to a wedding, though.

They released him from the hospital (again) today. In the past six months, he hasn't spent more than a month out of the hospital. This time was for internal bleeding - he got his colon removed. We'll just keep on removing parts that stop working until there ain't no more to remove...

On a brighter note, I've got a new cylinder for my Stinson 108-1 on the way. It's been down for a couple weeks (leaking valve guides). I'm ready to play around with it, now that the weather's starting to cool off.

The runway is in great shape out at T14 - a little bumpy because of the summer harshness, but not bad at all. I've been in and out in my Comanche many times over the last week. I'm living here about 60% of the time now and working on getting my "city home" ready to put on the market. Visitors are always welcome!!
 
Walt's a good chap and has a nice spot to laze the afternoon away. If you are coming down in Oct, you absolutely can't miss Reklaw. IMNSHO, it's the best of the best in small and uncontrolled fly-ins ever. I would say it rivals Gaston's but of course, there are a lot of people who would disagree. The focus at Reklaw is relaxed flying and odd planes. Last year they had to cancel but this year is looking good so far.

Ranger airport is an anomaly, but there's really nothing there. The town of Ranger is hanging on by it's fingernails. The have a community college, and a few old rusted tractors downtown, but apart from that, Ranger is dead. The airport has a quanset dome hanger you can park in to get out of weather, but it's not enclosed, and it's not attended. There is no car there.
 
I'm still putzing around here too; would love to see you if I'm here. I got a bit sidetracked with some issues with the baron, but am back in the saddle again. Hope you drift out this-a-way.

Still working out the details of the trip, but wonder if it would work if I flew back up to your place on Sunday, the day after the Ft. Parker fly-in? I'll be staying in Groesbeck that night and hope to get a ride back out to the Fort Parker Airport on Sunday morning.

I was thinking I'd like to run down to Llano. I was hoping to go there last time I was in Texas, but instead got chased home by storms.

Ryan, what is the name of that grass field that you train out of? I was also going to try to make it to that one last time.

The taildragger tour could easily end up as a flight of three or four if you're not careful. Except for the tent part. I no longer camp in places that don't have a lobby.

Hahaha. I try not to, except at OSH, and even then it gets harder and harder to climb out of that tent every day.

I sometimes am seen at 53T and 17TE, but not too often. I've since moved my place of residence so I'm in two places during the week.

Is your RV still available that evening? If so, I would love to be able to use it if that's okay. :)

Joyce said I could visit her at her ranch for a day or so, so I plan to fly to Clarksville on Monday morning. I'm really looking forward to spending time with Joyce. :yes:

I got the zydeco music playin' and I'm browning flour for my roux! There is a cold front moving in this weekend, so bring your wool underwear. I've piled up wood next to the fire pit, so there's no excuse for being cold.

Gumbo goes down better in cold weather.

I am so impressed with these grass strip safaris. I'll have to try that some time. I used to do motorcycle trips like this when I was young, slim, handsome (at least my mom thought so) and single, but never in an aircraft. Sounds like lots of fun.

Your Bonanza loves grass fields. It's like landing on a big soft pillow and so easy on the tires and brakes. Now that I''m at a grass field, I never want to land on asphalt again.
