Flight attendant pops chute and runs from jet after fight with passenger

Well if you just gave 'notice' and that was the only way out of the workplace, out you go.

Well the action was certainly odd but I gotta believe being an FA can be a real PIA. So many freaking pax who feel entitled.

The sentiments on the NYT blog seem to be leaning heavily in Steven's favor. Unless it's just gratitude for providing some comic relief.

OK, am I the only one who thinks these two were separated at birth?

The passenger and the male flight attendant exchanged heated words. For reasons that are so far unclear, the flight attendant then activated the inflatable emergency slide, went down the chute ...
Good thing the argument didn't take place while the plane was still in the air...

He better hope he doesn't get a bill. Popping the slide removes the jet from service until its replaced.

I never get the passengers that think that jumping on the collecting and standing somehow makes the people and plane move faster. The airline has no problem delaying the jet for 3 hours but you're going to save 3 minutes.

I'm suprised someone didn't do this that one time that an airliner got stuck on the tarmac for 9 hours.

As one of my friends always says... "You can do anything you want on your last day of employment" :D

It's the fact that he took two beers before blowing the slide that makes this story great! This story was all the rage in the crew room today. I can't say I havn't expected this out of a few of our crew members on some days.

That is true! hahahaha

When I had a tech support job at the end of my last week I told everyone with hairy problems to call back next week and ask for me.

I had a friend who did tech support for a high-speed ISP. 90% of the problems came down to it wasn't plugged in or wasn't turned on. On his last week he started answering questions with "Well, if you weren't an idiot you probably wouldn't be having this problem," etc. They decided that he could leave a few days earlier than his original layoff date.

I agree!

I mean, nabbing a beer and then popping the slide - that's just...fantastic.

Frankly, were I JetBlue's CEO, I'd offer the guy a raise, repair the jet at company (read: insurance) expense, and issue a public statement that "a-hole passengers are not welcome on our aircraft." :)

If it was WN, I could actually see that happening! Well, maybe all but the raise part.

Well, I can't believe the amount of crap people carry onboard these days. Those overhead bins are overflowing. So many people try to board airplanes with two large bags, and then they're told to gate-check them, and people get angry. I can understand if the flight attendants get annoyed.

If he stays out of jail - and even if he doesn't - he's got career ahead of him as a travel expert. Blog page here we come!

The tool of a passenger is sure to be hired by Martin Aviation Group shortly.

Then they should get annoyed at their management for demanding $25 to check a bag.

Seems to me this guy simply reverted to a 5 year old child and had a temper tantrum. I can see becoming annoyed with the passenger(s) but the rest was way overboard.

No, that's not MAG's way. They'll just put her on the web page and quote her in a press release as one of their new business partners.

If he stays out of jail

Along these lines, I was wondering: is the passenger charged with anything? Seems to me you've got a prima facie case of violating various aviation laws (it's a crime to disobey instructions of the flight crew), disorderly conduct, and assault/battery.

If the passenger's not charged, there's something wrong here.

Hehe, I hadn't even thought about that!

Mr Slater's lawyer claims that Slater's actions were "justified" by the unruly female passenger's behavior. I wonder if the PIC's emergency authority also applies to flight attendants? If so he'll probably say he had to activate the chute and depart to prevent the woman from causing him further bodily harm.

I do hope the woman is also arrested, while I cannot condone what Mr Slater did, if the stories are true she clearly violated federal law and should suffer the consequences along with Slater.

...please study the instructions on the card in the seat back in front of you...

When they showed the FA on the perp walk, you can see he has a good sized gash on his forehead from the passenger dropping the seven-rooms-worth bag on his head and not apologizing.

You know... it's really very odd that the mystery pax still has not been publicly identified. Most likely she's some sort of big-wig. Probably a politician, if I had to take a guess.

That is the rumor-mill info I have been hearing as well.
