I just finished running 26.2 miles and boy are my legs tired!!

Ran the Philadelphia Marathon this morning. Beautiful weather (45f at beginning, 57f at end), blue skies, thousands and thousands of fans along the entire route.

I had hoped to break 4hrs, but that was not to be. 4:07 was the best I could do. Right around 19mi the wheels fell off the cart and I went from 9min miles to 10:00 miles to 10:30 miles, so I came up short. On the plus side, I didn't walk a single step, so that's a big moral victory.

F'n AWESOME Andrew. What a huge accomplishment! Especially a 4 hour (I'll give you the 1.75 minutes per mile) first time out.

Raising a glass from Virginia...

Cheers,

-Andrew

Good Job! Quite an accomplishment! Will you run another one?

Are you serious? You do know we invented the wheel right? ;)

Remind me never to get in a foot race with you unless I'm on a Harley.

Well DONE!

Why do birds fly south in the winter? Because it's too freeking far to walk... or RUN!

Let this be a lesson to you.

Seriously, I'm jealous. Nice work.

I spent a couple of hours today cleaning the trailer and preparing for winter storage. It was about the right amount of exertion.

Great going; I am in awe.
Used to run as a teen. Did 16mi once, almost died (knees). They still aren't right.

Amazing, congratulations to you. Quite an accomplishment. I can't think of anytime in my life that I would have even considered that. Good for you!!

At 23 miles the answer was NFW.

As the pain fades, that answer is gradually changing to maybe.

I can understand that. I used to run years ago also. The endorphins are addictive!!!

wow. I did FIVE and almost died.

Could ride a bike like crazy though. In 5 hours I could go 100 miles. (note past tense) I keep thinking, "fercripsake I outta be able to run a good long ways!" But it's TOUGH

My wife did Ironman® triathlons. Her first ever complete marathon was at Ironman Hawaii in '87, along with her first ever 2.4 mile open water swim, and her first ever non-stop 100+ mile bike ride. She finished in 13:43:55. She, too, said no F'n way would she do it again. Three days later on the plane home she said she could probably beat that time next year. She did, too. 13:06:13 in '88. she did complete 5 more Ironman distance races (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run), though not in Hawaii.
You have my deepest admiration as well as my condolences. It is an addiction. (though not as bad as Ironman Distance Tri's)

Damn. Impressive. I hope to be able to do that eventually. Started running 3 miles per night earlier this summer but took on some knee pain. Took a break from it and the knee pain never went away. Oddly enough now that I have the house and am active here fixing things it seems to be improving.

You seem to be under the impression that it's not supposed to hurt:rofl:

Glad to hear you're working out.

If it doesn't snow here soon I'm gonna have to start running. XC skiing is much sweeter though.

I worked the rudder pedals in my plane today for about 2 hours. Burned dozens of calories and got my pulse up to 80 a couple times...:D

Excellent work! I should probably use those leg things more often than I do... :D

I just flew in from Philadelphia and boy, are my arms tired...

Ya know, it is funny what we will do to ourselves... This coming weekend is a ham radio contest... It is 48 continuous hours of assaulting my ear drums, having my butt go so numb it aches, muscles going into spasms, sheer pain, and by the end of the sleep deprivation you start having flashes of hallucinations... Every year I say, "never again"... I said that last year, in capitals...

I just spent this past weekend making sure the antennas are in good shape, the radios and amplifiers are working, and laying in a store of peanuts, apples, etc... Boy, this is gonna be fun!

Congratulations Andrew - thats a major accomplishment! Still, that's quite a few heartbeats gone, never to be recovered!

Andrew,

You're out of your mind. I'm jealous.

The scary thing is -- I ran this marathon as a 'proof of concept' for a full Ironman.

I'm planning 2 Ironman 70.3s next year, and depending on how that works out, a full Ironman the following year. A 2.4mile swim is a walk in the park for me. I've done 2 century bike rides and 3 metric centuries, so I know how sore my azz is after that. I didn't know what a marathon felt like. Now I do. Why does this idea persist? Because I am stupid.

All this to lose some spare pounds.

Tri is freakishly addictive. All the tri guys I know border on the messianic.

Have you ever done a double century? You should really give that a shot... great test for where your "bonk line" is.

Cheers,

-Andrew

At least most Tri people are friendly before and after the event.

Not so with road bike racing....

Very, very few racers are. A business acquaintance of mine is a Cat 2 and he's a great guy. I rode an event with a Paris-Roubaix winner this past summer, and he was a blast. He was NOT fun when he put the gas on, and he barely broke a sweat.

Cheers,

-Andrew

It was the biggest shock when I first started racing -- I was happily chatting away while everybody around me was dead serious.

After I got competitive I kept it up -- really messed with their heads! :D
