First Hucks Start in 70 Years

Wow. That is interesting! I wonder how many times someone slipped the Hucks into forward gear after starting?

Not a problem after digesting the article and photos. The truck was stopped with the starter adapter 6-8 inches from the prop receptacle.

The truck was firmly chocked against further forward motion.

After starting, the truck was backed away from the airplane before the chocks were picked up.

If the driver accidentally put the truck into forward, the chocks would have prevented the 6+ inches of forward motiuon required to get the starter adapter into the prop.

Interesting!

I believe the carrier based Jap Zero was started the same way. No need for a starter if you had an engine out, or kamazazied.

IIRC, the IJN planes had starters, but some of the early army planes (I'm thinking Nate, Oscar) had hucks bosses on the props.

Have you ever driven a model "T"?

They don't have gears.

which pedal do you push to make it go backwards?

guess who learned to drive on one :)

Guess who is really old?

:D

My uncle restored a Modet T about 25 years ago. Still has it, and yes I have driven it. I thought changing the spark was really cool too.

Very nice... just the sort of thing you want when you happen to have a Hind that needs starting. The Hucks replica is excellent, but that Hind...! I think I'm in love.
