Hey guys, I recently completed a checkride and due to completely unforeseen circumstances i need to change the address on the certificate. I changed it online but a friend who went through something similar said it changes back once the FAA processes the new certificate. Am i able to fly with an incorrect address on the temp if its correct in the FAA registry? Can the FSDO fix this?

When you change your address with the FAA they do NOT print you a new certificate with your new address on it. The only thing that matters is that the correct address on file. So if your permanent pilot certificate arrives with your old address it shouldn't matter, nor does the address on the temp certificate matter -- if you updated it online you should be good to go.

.... I don't recall if the FAA will send you a new certificate just for an address change though. Of course adding a rating or another certificate you would. But reporting your new address (think it's within 30 days) complies.

Umm, yes they do. Last 4 moves I've made in the past 7 years, to include the most recent move in 2015, I've received a new certificate in the mail after I updated my address online. I've kept all of the old ones so it makes it easier to remember where the hell I've lived when filing out my security clearance paperwork every 10 years.

I just moved twice in the last year and updated my address with the FAA each time. They will only mail a new printed certificate if you ask them to (and pay the $2 fee for it).

As said above, if you WANT one with your new address you have to request and pay for a replacement.
The reg only requires that you notify the FAA about address changes. Nothing requires you to have a permanent certificate with your current address on it.
I don't know what makes you special.

That's it! You pay for a replacement with your correct address on it. Thanks. If not you're fine as long as you report the change.
To answer the original question, I had no problem when I added my Instrument Rating. The new certificate came with the (new) current address. IF you're going to add a rating soon, save the $2 but you have to report the change (can do so online for free).

Okay, fine. So I forgot that I may have paid the lousy $2 for a new certificate. Didn't know I had an option not to get a new one.
