Can you tell from the FAA a/c registry data when an airplane changed hands last?

I dont know about other aircraft but mine says certification date 6/6/2008 which is when my aircraft duly registered with FAA ( purchase date was 5/2008 ) it makes sense

I just looked up mine. The certificate issue date should tell you when it was registered to the current owner.

U can order at $10 CD with the whole history from day 1. AOPA also has a service through a brocket who will get u list of everything including who sold, who bought and how much was paid ( if mentioned in the bill of sale) and if there is any lien on it
The information AOPA will get you is the same information that comes on the CD from the FAA. Using the AOPA (or any other title search company) service will just get you the information faster, and they might sort some of it out to make it easier for a novice to read.
Getting the records CD is how I would determine the chain of ownership. You should be able to make a determination based on the registration certificate issue date listed on the FAA website however.

Uh oh. Seems that my airplane made a hard landing with "substantial" damage back in 1976. First I've read about it.

First place I check when looking at a plane. I found a cardinal once and the broker said it had no damage history. I asked him about the damage and he kept spouting NDH. So he finally called up the owner and got the story. mhmmm no thanks ill pass.
