The Michigan State police responded to a letter by the ACLU by denying that they secretly extract data from your cell phone during routine traffic stops. They bought the same kinds of machines that are used to transfer data from your cell phone when you buy an upgrade.

"Police must hold a search warrant, or obtain consent from the mobile device holder, before using the DED to extract mobile data. Furthermore the DEDs can only be used by "specialty teams on criminal cases, such as crimes against children," the statement read.

"The DEDs are not being used to extract citizens' personal information during routine traffic stops.""

The company that manufactures them is Cellbrite. Its actually an expanded version of the system that cell phone retailer's use to transfer data from old phones to new phones. The initial FOIA request resulted in a request for payment of several hundred thousand dollars by the State of Michigan to the ACLU for the cost of complying.

We have to hand over our phones to the police?
But not that many people would ask that question. They'd just say "No I don't mind if you take a look at my phone." Same way the police get away with all those voluntary car searches....
