The aircraft's registration shows expired in the FAA data base. expired in May 2015.
the N is still assigned to the aircraft serial number. the aircraft was sold this month.
a request for registration in the new owners name was sent to OKC with proper payment, and a bill of sale was properly filled out and and included in the envelope.

what will happen next?

what will happen next?

The new owner will get a permanent registration card in about six weeks. Use the temporary registration in the mean time. There's a search box on the FAA web site to find your in-process registration. There's also a page that shows how far behind they are. E.g. "Now processing mail from Sep 1"

Yes, when there is a sale, even if the registration is expired, the new registration application is a valid temporary registration.
If there is not a transfer of ownership, the owner can not use the registration application as a temporary (the renewal application is different).

I figured you would know the answer, Tom.
I've never bought any aircraft with a expired registration. there is no reference as to how this is handled by the FAA.

before the registration expires the registered owner will get three letters, the last will explain the registration has expired and the aircraft can no longer be flown. Your FSDO can get you a copy if you want it.

Got a reference for that? I couldn't find one.

That is what we are hoping for, but the FAA is so far behind there is no records being processed yet.

Just checked your references and " no records found"

I just registered my plane in August. It took a while for that web page to show my documents were received, but I'm pretty sure it was within a day or two of when my bank showed that my check was cashed. Then at least a month after that for the registration to show up in the mail.

Have dealt with several planes with expired registrations. You did it exactly right and everything will be just like a normal sale. Now for the current owner to renew expired is about impossible. You will have new reg in normal time
