Egypt Air B777 doesn't hold short at JFK

"Near miss" sounds so much scarier than "Runway incursion." Until you read into the article, you don't know it happened ON THE GROUND. (And yes, I'm aware of Tenerife.)

It was a runway incursion, but I think 'near miss' was appropriate as well. 'Runway incursion' by itselt doesn't necessarily imply there is any risk of an incident. 'Near miss' makes it more clear that something bad almost happened.

George Carlin: Here's one they just made up: "near miss". When two planes almost collide, they call it a near miss. It's a near hit. A collision is a near miss.

What the hell am I listening to?

ATC: American 926 Heavy....
Unintelligible
ATC: American 926 Heavy....
Unintelligble
ATC: American 926 Heavy....
Background Noise: "Whoa...oooooh....Takeoff clearance!"
ATC: American 926 Heavy....

That's about everything I heard. Did I miss something?

I heard the same thing.

The female controller is talking to "Egypt Air 986 Heavy" The male controller you can hear in the background is talking to the Lufthansa. On LiveATC.net (registration required to hear the tapes) they have both the ground recording (Egypt Air), and the tower recording (Lufthansa). Egypt Air acknowledges the hold short instruction, but doesn't actually comply causing the Lufthansa to abort the takeoff. The communication between the controller and Egypt Air seemed very clear, but still resulted in a runway incursion.

I'm not sure what lessons can be learned here. Traffic lights on the various runways/taxiways to reinforce the controller's instructions?

Did you see the comments of some of the crazy people on there.

"He must've been a terrorist!"

Good lord. Demagougery run amok for the past 10 years huh?

Railroad crossing arms. Or maybe those cool strips that blow out tires in a size big enough for nose gear tires! Yes! ;)

Or just put catapult style shuttlecocks everywhere, tie the nose gear to 'em and let the controllers drive the jumbos around like slot car racers. Then cat launch 'em.

Haha.

Railroad crossing arms.
Sometimes even those don't help.

Recent Amtrak accident...

The fellow drivers in the three-truck convoy described ample warnings signs and functioning crossing gates and warning lights, Weener said. The first warning sign was almost 900 feet before what Weener described as a state-of-the-art rail crossing gate. There were additional markers at 650 feet.
