Dropped the new bird at the avionics shop Friday!

Isn't there some cheaper material it could be made out of that doesn't cost $5,000? :dunno:

There better be a cheaper way to replace it! I'm hoping it won't tear when they take it down! I should know tomorrow after they take it down if it's ok.:dunno:

You should have scheduled this about three weeks ago since it has rained every weekend since!

I was scheduled to drop her off April 29, my wife and I have something every weekend until June 1, so I've got some time, but I do want it finished sooner rather than later.;)

I find it interesting how hiring a specialist to do the job doesn't increase the level of assuredness of a positive outcome.

It has more to do with the way they're stretched and installed. Have you ever watched a carpet-layer in action?

Doesn't matter.

Personal story: Years ago I locked my keys in the house (thought I lost them). I called a locksmith - allegedly a professional. He charged me a fee just to show, then a fee to "do something". Then he said that he couldn't get in and asked my permission 'to cause slight damage to the lock, latch, etc' to which I naively consented. After he BROKE in, he offered to replace the lock - for a cost of course, which is where I got off the ride. I later realized I'd been hustled and could have broken in my damn self for free.

Likewise, if John pays a "pro" to damage the headliner, he's being financially wonton wanton.

I must be old, that was a waste of 00:15

I'm with ya. I watched it twice to figure out what was funny. I could probably watch it 20 more times and still not see it.

So your doctor always guarantees success?

Doesn't matter.

No, but I expect him to do better than I could on my own. Otherwise, "what am I paying you for???"

Competence rather than perfection. You want a guarantee? Then feel free to hire whoever the hell you want that will guarantee that it won't tear, then call me when you're ready for avionics work rather than interior work.

Guarantee: No
Better odds: Yes

Visit a shop and take a hard look at the way the headliners are installed. Post the results here as to how you will make it happen.

We had a "successful" removal of the headliner!! :cheerswine::yesnod::yes:

Is that an airplane? Looks like a construction area!

Glad that they got it down successfully!

It boggles my mind that they can pull it all apart and cut out miles of wiring, put it back together and it will run and fly like it's supposed to!:dunno: Or at least that's the theory.

One wire at a time :)

Not crazy about all the insulation bags and loose insulation.

I didn't take this picture, but I think the insulation is pulled down to allow for the installation of the antennas, but I could be wrong. ;)

Big surprise the airplane won't be ready on time.:rolleyes2: The G-600 is on backorder and won't be in until next Wednesday.:mad2: The won't send the install kit without the unit, so they can't pre-install the kit and plug in the unit when it arrives.:mad2: The good news is I didn't really have any plans for next weekend.;)
The original due date was today, 5-17 which I knew was VERY optomistic, but it was revised to next Friday 5-24, now they are shooting for 5-29. :mad2:
Anyway, time to spare, go by air! :D

So, double the time, double the price??! Sounds about right! ;)

Strange.
I would think that if I agreed on the date to accept the aircraft I would first make sure I can have all new parts lined up and waiting by that date. When I leave my car with a mechanic for a more complex job I always discuss parts and their availability.

We ran into the same problem trying to have the WX-500 installed in the 310 the first time. With scheduling the visit 3 months ahead of time, they didn't bother trying to order the antenna until the plane was there (I offered to give them a credit card to pre-order any parts needed).

Turns out the antenna had a 6 week lead time. Oops. Job didn't get installed, and I was very angry because of the other impacts that had. That shop didn't get my business anymore after that.

John, I sure hope that the end result of this turns out well - so far it seems like it's been a cluster!

Planning isn't the longest suit of many shops. Parts? We need parts?

Strange.

That's one of the things I'm not happy about! I dropped the plane off April 26, a couple days early, but the job was supposed to start April 29, I dropped off the deposit on April 30, I didn't hear about a back order until May 8. If they had ordered everything when I gave them the $40,000.00 check, we would have known about the back order. :mad2: Not sure it would have changed anything, but at least I would have been prepared for the delay.

Actually they are trying to triple the labor amount!:yikes: But that's not happening, they underbid the job a little and want me to make up the difference, to the tune of $20K!:no:
After speaking with the new company president last weekend, I think they've dropped the idea of the additional charges.;) She called today to give me an update and didn't bring up money, just completion schedule. :)

They obviously had higher priorities once the $40K was in hand. See any new cars in their parking lot?

That's at least good news! So are you thinking you'll consider using them again?

I am withholding judgement until the job is complete and the final bill is tallied! :dunno:
The meeting we had a week into the project was great, but should have happened BEFORE the job began. I'll give a full report when I get it back and see how it all works together.;)
