DL1086 lost control on runway landing into LGA. Lost part of its wing. Preggo wife was on board and captured this picture after crawling out of the emergency exit window. Everyone's safe but would really like to know what the heck happened on landing.

Accident happens about 2 min into the recording. Sounds like there were serious visibility issues as the tower didn't see it. Initial report comes from a car moving around the airport that calls tower and says to close the airport.

Thankfully sounding like it just skidded off and there at no serious injuries.

Glad everyone is safe.

They lucked the hell out - there is a nothing but water on the other side of that fence. If I were in the cockpit watching this unfold, I'm pretty sure I would have s*** my pants. ;)

Guessing snow and vis. played a big part

Pretty high baro pressure for a blinding snowstorm..

Supposedly landed with 9kt tailwind.

I'll always remember watching those Thomas the Tank Engine episodes when these things happen . . .

"Ice and Snow caused the accident. . . "

Airplane skidded off the runway - likely the result of 'nil' braking and a [light] tailwind.

Landing runway 13 with wind 02 @ 12. most of a very light left quartering tail wind -

Not sure if these were the exact conditions at the time of the accident, but this would have been tight. At my airline, we're not allowed to land with more than 15 knots of crosswind when the vis is less than 3/4 or 4000RVR. If the braking action sucks, it's even less.

If the METAR posted above is about what they were dealing with, then it would have been a crosswind, which isn't unusual when landing on 4.

both front doors look like they are blocked by the fence - good thing there was no fire because two huge ways out of that airplane are blocked by the fence.

listening to ATC they were reporting winds 020 at 12 landing runway 13.

not much of a tail wind. Departures were off runway 4 and landing 13. I would have done the other way around - but - then your landing traffic has to cross the active which slows the whole thing down . . .

I heard the callout on the audio of the RVR but don't recall what it was. The whole thing did sound pretty close to the bone, like you said.

Ah - interesting. I didn't listen to the audio. I saw the RVR listed for 4 in the METAR and just assumed that was the landing runway. I don't think I've ever landed on 13.

Had a chance to catch up with my wife (on the flight). Said she knew something was wrong as soon as they put down. Loud thump and then actually felt like they were speeding up and then could see debris kicking up through the window. Wonder if the auto brakes were set too aggressively for the conditions or maybe they botched the reversers (unlikely)? She also said the pilot definitely looked as if he had sh*t himself.

Maybe only one side went into reverse? Might account for the thump and the rapid right turn. Meh - hard to say so far of course.

Sounds like seriously contaminated runway.

I call dibs on the 430/530W combo and an HSI!

Controller had no clue what was going on. He didn't believe the ground unit and was like, fo-real fo-real or you jes playin Frankie....

Depends what the previous baro pressure was. It's the direction and speed of the trend that matters. The static number is not itself indicative of conditions.

Glad she's OK.

Plane was from ATL, probably didn't have snow tires. :D

BTW, OP, glad you're wife is fine other than being frozen and scared witless. Not nice :nonod:

I'da gone with the cable chains for what I was seeing at LGA. :)

Glad the wife is ok, and just had a chilly walk. Could have been baaaaaaaaaad with the wind and the snow, and the east bay(or whatever it is).

I would rather drive through 12" of snow, or across ball bearings then 1" of slush....... That stuff is unpredictable......:hairraise::yikes:

Agree.

Side question... does the MD-80 have anti-skid brakes?

My first thought was another bullet dodged. Both this and the VFR landing at SFO could have gone way, way worse.

My dad was on the next ATL-LGA flight deadheading home. They were diverted to Albany. This weather sucks.
