What's the proper method of doing that?
I know it is done thru the registration branch of the FAA at OKC. but what form of notification must be used.

I sent the form in for the Aztec. They kicked it back for some reason (I forget). I sent it back, they kicked it back for another reason. Then I said "screw this." And just let it expire. Want to make it difficult? I'll just ignore the rule.

N6927Y I believe is now up for purchase.

Too bad it's not N2769Y.

If it was, after your initial call, you could come back with subsequent calls as "69yankme"!

You would have to take that up with the folks at Piper who assigned that tail number to the ol' gal.

But, I can also honestly say that even if it had been 2769Y, it would never have occurred to me to make that reply. You have a special talent for such observations, Tim. ;)

There was an airplane at the airport... I think still is, N68BJ. Made all the line guys snicker.

The following is required...and this from recent experience where my aircraft was destroyed and a letter from OKC registration branch (They contacted me).

1. A request in writing from the registered owner stating the reason for the request (destroyed, scrapped, ect.) .

2. The complete description of the to include the make, model, serial number, and registration number on the request.

Depends. Do you plan to renew/re-register this same aircraft at a later date? Or is it for export?
No,, it has been used as repair sections for 4 other 150s and the rest scrapped due to corrosion.

I can't take credit for it. There's a guy from upstate NY over on CPS, Tom Mallon aka Jammer, who has a skyhawk that ends in Y...he had quite a few mechanical issues with it one year and thus nicknamed it "YankMe." When I saw the 69...well...

If you have the complete Registration card fill out the portion marked below. I don't think the new certificates have that portion on the back anymore. And mail it in with the certificate. I usually send stuff to Oak City with a signature requirement. If you only have the certificate without the place to fill out "scrapped" then you'll need the 8050-1B mentioned above, fill same info and mail it.

I'll be curious on how Oak City handles the data tag. Usually they prefer the local FSDO to handle it. Good luck.
about a year ago, my super cub customer and I had a conversation with the lady at OKC she said at that time when they have the data tag, they will never register the aircraft, but since we had the data tag they would re-register the destroyed aircraft we were working on.

Interesting. Several years ago I was helping an individual clean up some loose ends and sent several helicopter data plates (engines/airframes) to Oak City along with other documents. Received a letter back with the data plates only and instructions to see so and so at the FSDO. Long story short he contacted the OEM about said plates then destroyed them at their request. The latest Order that came out last year on scrap/destroyed aircraft I think had guidance to take the plates to the local office. But +1 they'll never register an existing aircraft if the original plate is gone.

I wonder how they would know it is destroyed if they didn't do it.?
We can wait, we'll see what happens? we have time.

I don't think it's a matter of knowing the plate is destroyed as to when someone attempts to register an aircraft without one. The old days of "rebuilding from salvage" (like every Stearman) are gone. Those days were replaced by having to get a letter from the TC holder in order to register/certify. Now you're screwed if you don't have the original paperwork/plates. There are a number of current examples where people still try and are shutdown by Oak City. I wouldn't be surprised if that last Order came out because of this guy below. He must of had some serious money involved to take it to this level.

That letter pretty much proves my point.
