This past week I had occasion to fly a nice glass-panel Cessna TR182 from Goodyear, Arizona, to Bremerton, Washington, and return with a VFR Mooney M20F. Along the way my wife and I were able to visit friends and family in Vancouver WA. It was my first visit back to my 21-year home field, Pearson Field (KVUO), since we moved away almost five years ago.
Leaving Arizona, we sidestepped some morning convection north of Blythe, stopped for breakfast at KWJF (Lancaster CA), then landed for the night at KMCC (Sacramento CA). The rooms at the Lions Gate Hotel are the remodeled officers’ quarters from the old McClellan AFB, and the old Officers Club is now the hotel restaurant and bar. The rooms are appropriately decorated.
Wildfires in northern California and southern Oregon put a lot of smoke in the air. Between Redding and Roseburg we had legal VFR visibility at 10,500’, but no discernible horizon and not much view of the ground.
First landing in almost five years at former home-field KVUO. It was heartening to see the historic airport and its FBO/flight school so busy.
On Saturday I flew the TR182 to Bremerton, swapped airplanes, and returned to KVUO in the Mooney. The restaurant at Bremerton is closed now, but there were a couple of pretty Wacos to look at when I arrived.
A couple of days later we set out for home in the Mooney.
The fire in the northern California Sierras was still going strong. Our headwind was evident in the direction the smoke was being blown.
After a very long and hot day, with stops at KRBL and KVIS, we arrived at KTRM for an overnight stop. We wanted a fresh start for the last leg to Phoenix in the morning, before the daily convection fired up.
