Is the 360 in an engine code IO-360 the displacement of each individual cylinder or the displacement of all the cylinders combined?

I always thought it was the entire engine. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me.

It's definitely NOT each individual cylinder.

DMS is right. It's all the cylinders added together.

Displacement of all the cylinders.

Related question: are O-360 and O-540 cylinders interchangeable?

Is it cylinder displacement or the volume displaced by piston movement?

4 cyl displacement converted to 6 cyl and 8 cyl?
320 x1.5- 480
360 x1.5- 540
390 x1.5- 580 (close enough)
360 x2- 720

Also, the Continental O-200 (4 cyl) and O-300 (6 cyl).

The ill-starred 165 hp Continental IO-346, used only in the A23 and A23A Beech Musketeer (1965-68), was a 4-cylinder knock-off of the IO-520.

It’s fun to convert all the airplane displacement numbers into liters so you can compare them with your cars, since liters is popular these days in those.

I fly a 7.7L airplane. :) The biggest vehicular engine I’ve ever driven behind wasn’t that big.

I drive an 8.3 Cummins

Yeah. My Cummins is only a 5.9L. :) The Yukon is 5.3L and whatever the Subaru is, just list it under “gutless” and call it good. You’re either floored in it to get it to go anywhere or coasting to a stop. Haha. Okay almost.
