Good afternoon everyone!

This is my first post on these forums and I want to start off by saying what a huge load of useful resources I found here. I honestly went through many posts on checkrides and advice that was given on preparing for my checkride. Because of everything I read I figured I would share my story on aviation and the struggles that have been a part of that.

My story starts off in October 2016 I was sitting at around 40 hours of flight time and my instructor was ready to sign me off for my checkride. It was a really special moment for me because all the practice and planning finally prepared me for this moment. I was part of a flight school based out of KHVN. Unfortunately tragedy struck at the sister branch in KBDL and a student pilot lost their life in an accident. At this time the flight school closed their doors during the investigation and about 90% of the CFIs had left including the one I did all my training with. The reason for the crash and accusations that the flight school had told the news really split the community and many people had cut ties with the school.

Despite my CFI leaving we always had contact with each other he finished giving me my endorsements and I was ready but didn't have a plane. The flight school was under investigation and had me on the hook for four months. At this point I didn't fly at all and ended up having to put more hours on with the only CFI left at the school who was very young and dreamed about working for the airlines. He signed my endorsements and I was ready for the checkride again.

The only reason I had stayed with this flight school was because the warriors that I flew were owned by the FBO, the school had owned the tomahawks. That Saturday my 2nd CFI had lost his life in another accident with the same flight school at Tweed airport.

At this point I was completely done, a student and CFI have lost their lives in performing aviation, something that they loved. At this point the FAA and FBI were all over them again.

I completely seperated my self from the flight school and linked up with my initial CFI. Honestly he had helped me through this process of many months and struggles. He had started at a new flight school and new plane at KBDR. It took me some more time to get used to all this and he made sure I was ready. We scheduled the ride and ofcourse it was 1/4sm vis and ovc 003. I ended up calling the DME and we were able to finish the oral that day.

We saved the flight the flight for next week and I couldn't wait. All these months that went by of the struggles, the ups and downs and thankfully after the ride I walked away with my PPL.

I learned many lessons from these past months but I've gotta say the aviation community is a strong knit group of individuals and I'm now getting ready to start instrument training!

Safe flights

Damn. TWO fatalities at the same flight school, in separate accidents?

And the FBI was involved? Do you know why?

I believe it's still on going, last I saw they went to the school and left with boxes of papers. My guess maintence wasn't being done of the aircraft they owned.

Very odd story. Hope they get to the bottom of it.

PS- Do you mean KHFD instead of KBDL?

I am guessing (SWAG) that foreign students are enrolled at the flight school.

On this part, congratulations! Joe

Congrats! Seems to be so many problems students have with flight schools and/or CFIs these days. I haven't really instructed basically full time since 1989 and never had all these problems w/ FBOs and planes. Different times I guess. I've done a little bit the past few years since I retired and the flight school/planes I use seem to not experience these problems.

That describes basically every flight school across the country, so I'm not sure it's particularly useful information. Much of the world learns to fly in the US.

The FBI was involved because a student pilot intentionally crashed the plane with the CFI on board. Fortunately only the student died and the CFI survived.

After the obstacles you faced, persevering through all that to get your checkride done is an awesome achievement - congratulations!

Congrats! Way to overcome the obstacles!

Way to overcome not only the checkride, but some pretty tragic circumstances standing in your way! Congratulations!

I assume the FBI got involved because those were not accidents.

Rich, congratulations on passing your checkride, welcome to the club of flyboys!

I'm not sure the FBI was involved. The articles I linked said federal agents from the DOT IG department. People don't always understand one federal investigator from another.

It was sort of like when the Washington Post reported a controller from Washington Center in Leesburg was arrested on drug charges. Turns out it was a flight service specialist from the Leesburg AFSS.

The second article you linked did claim that the FBI was involved in investigating the October crash. Whether or not the reporter got it right could be another issue.

Technically FSS specialists are controllers too. They take the same qualifying test (or did). When I took the test it was for enroute, terminal, and FSS. Back when we had FSS at many airports some of those specialists came from terminal or enroute. Now all this may have changed by now though.

Yes, but he was NOT at Washington Center. Washington Center is a complex of building up on Route 7 with a big HF antenna on a tower. The Leesburg AFSS was a windowless room at the Leesburg airport (why these guys pretend to be controllers in darkened room staring at computer terminals rather than having a window so they can see the actual weather I don't know).

Amusingly, after some terrorist event (I think it was the OKC bombing) they blocked off the parking spaces in front of the AFSS room at the airport. I suspect the biggest threat to the AFSS was some equally confused terrorist would blow up the FSS also thinking it performed some essential role in air traffic like Washington Center. You could have leveled the Leesburg FSS and all that would happen is the phones would ring a second longer as Altoona picked up the line.

Or a jealous mistress. :yesnod:

Congrats Rich.
I'm sure all of that was stressful. Glad to hear your original CFI was a good person and helped you through it all.

What were the planes you ended up flying during those months?...and which did/do you enjoy the most?

The second one states "The National Transportation Safety Board said its initial investigation indicated the crash was 'an intentional act.' As a result, the FBI took over the investigation and has not released any information since."
