Not much detail, but I heard on the traffic report they had I-75 closed for awhile this afternoon to remove the airplane from the southbound lanes; pilot was on the cellphone immediately after landing. They loaded the plane onto a flatbed.

Probably on his cellphone during the flight, too, and thought he was landing at an airport. See what cellphone distraction can lead to?:goofy:

"At 5 p.m. the plane was being transported to Metro Airport on a flatbed truck"

Why in the world would they take a 152 to DTW??? Probably just another reporter with zip GA knowledge.

DTW is closest airport to where it put down. Don't know if that's the reason or if it's reporter error.

Small Plane Lands on Interstate 75 (12/20/05) — A single-engine airplane made a safe emergency landing on Interstate 75 in suburban Detroit, state police say. The pilot managed to merge into traffic in the southbound lanes Monday, and there were no injuries, said Lt. Michael Boyd of the Southgate Fire Department. It happened about 3:30 p.m. EST. The pilot was the only person on board the two-seater, Boyd said.

"Preliminary indications are that he had mechanical difficulty with the engine," said Allen Park police Inspector Dale Covert. "There really are not many places to bring it down in the area."

Covert said the pilot feared the plane would flip if he landed in a field, so he used the freeway as a landing strip. Cars on the freeway at the time of the landing saw the plane coming and allowed the pilot to land, Covert said. "There were no injuries," he said. "It just disrupted traffic."

Finally someone else that says it was taken to Metro. Quoting a Police officer. From the map there may have been one airport closer but there are only two bridges that connect Gross Isle across the river. If there was clearance for the plane on the bridge, it would have really sanfued traffic.

I'm not sure it went to DTW either, but it should be easier to get there with the wings on. Trying to get to Ypsilanti from there would be interesting. Then again, reporting is subject to error.

Second time this year they've "flatbedded" an airplane around here.

Oops should've read your entire post. I'm in the thumb, but familiar with that area.
