I was puzzled from the start of the trial, when the prosecutors failed to have a cause of death, weapon, time, or place of death, and no witness as to anything of substance.

The whole fabric of the case was "these things could have happened and this woman may have done this, or that," but they never actually brought anything of value to the table, imo.

I have to wonder about the competence of a State Attorney that goes for the death penalty without strong, unquestionable facts. The crux of the case seemed to be, "Casey is a really, really bad person and should get the chair."

I'm glad it's over and hope the hub bub goes away, now.
 
Nobody in my office can believe she got off on the murder charges. They are all saying "everybody knows she did it". My response is that if we convicted on that basis, over time we would be convicting a lot of innocent people. I am just as hard on criminals as anyone, but I want PROOF before I want someone sentenced to death or life in prison.
 
I was under the impression there was overwhelming evidence and that it is a slam dunk case. We now have a new famous defense attorney and a prosecutor in search of a job.

really? i hardly watched any of the coverage during the trial. maybe one blurb on fox when i was in texas and a few articles on CNN. it was my impression there was basically no evidence linking her to the death. Hell they didn't even know how the kid was killed.

Just cause Nancy Grace says it 100 million times doesn't make it true
 
I bet she has a book/movie deal in the works already. So, she will be a convicted liar, and a very rich one. Can a seat in Congress be far behind?

I too have a problem with being convicted on circumstancial evidence but it was my impression that they did have solid physical evidence. I haven't followed the case closely enough to render a judgment either way, that was just my impresson.

No, but she does have a tee time with OJ on Friday morning after the misdemeanor sentencing....

Nancy Grace makes me ashamed to admit we come from the same hometown, and that she graduated from the same high school as my sister's kids.......

If'n I wuz CNN counsel, I'd be building a bunker every time she opened her mouth on TV.

Their case was, in a nutshell, "The child is dead and her mother is weird."

That's enough to convict in a lot of circumstances. Juries are people, and people aren't kind to weird mothers. I'm sure the prosecutors thought they had a slam dunk and were just going through the motions for a rubber stamp "guilty."

As for evidence, they had solid physical evidence that the child was dead. They had solid physical evidence that the mother was weird. That's all they thought they needed to show so it's all they produced. However, from everything I've read, they presented zero evidence that the mother killed her child.

Because prosecutors thought they could win a death penalty case without actually proving that the person they wanted executed had actually done anything. That should scare you, too, assuming they can't prove you actually killed anyone either.

I find myself in the rare and untested arena of actually agreeing with FC. I too wondered the same thingsfrom the beginning of this whole trial. I marvel that others seem to know what the prosecutor could not prove.

Yep but if that's all you proved to me I wouldn't hang a guilty vote against her.

I think that people are more amazed that any mother could act the way that Casey Anthony did. The media just took that fascination and ran with it.

I'm sure that's the angle they thought the Jury would take.

In pop psych speak the woman exhibited deviant behavior. You say it made her a POS. I say it was a bit weird. The prosecutors said, "A jury is going to hate her! SCORE!"

The problem is that a psychiatrist could make an argument that nothing the mother did was weird for an emotionally frail woman who had suffered a severe psychological blow. People do weird things when their world turns upside down, and some of those things look very bad, especially to people who (think they would) react differently.

Because she was a cute little white girl. Just like the girl that was killed in Aruba, pretty white dead girl = ratings and sympathy

Best thing that Casey Anthony did for herself was to listen to her lawyer and NOT testify.
 
I did not follow enough to really have a good opinion, but I was under the impression everyone was assuming she was guilty until proven kind of guilty. I didn't think she was getting a fair trial and that she was doomed. I don't know if she did it or not, but If I get in trouble.. I want her Lawyer or OJ simpsons Lawyer...

She would have been better off had she never spoken to the police to begin with. Two local cases emphasize this:

  • Estranged wife of lawyer is stabbed to death in her house. Lawyer, prime suspect, will not cooperate. A few days later, lawyer shows up with a deed where his ex wife gave him the house. Lawyer sold the house and is living happily ever after.
  • Foster child vanishes. Foster parents refuse to cooperate. There's not any evidence to even charge them. Foster parents are living happily ever after.

I understand what your trying to get at. But in all honesty, cases like this arent newsworthy today. If you look around you could find other little white girls who are missing or murdered but it takes some other element to get it "newsworthy". I dont think its right, just how it is.

I don't know if it was true in the Casey Anthony case but besides being cute and female I think it helps if you have friends or relatives who are willing and able to get the word out and work the media.
 
Three words: Duke Lacrosse Case.

Prosecution should have never proceeded without evidence in either case.

God Bless Nancy Grace with her whorish, scarlet lipstick and pitiless demeanor. I've always pictured the sort who hangs on every word of the hang-em-high Grace as the lowest of the low cracker living in some broken down single-wide in Boofoo, USA. I can't grab the remote fast enough when I see that malevolent clown. :vomit:

As much as I've tried to avoid paying attention to this sordid crackerfest, you'd have to be a complete Luddite to be unaware of this story. Frankly, the prosecutors blew it by overcharging the girl. These are the same numbnut, ladder-climbing idjitts who are looking to become our next idjitt Senator or Congresscritter. Garbage in . . . Garbage out.

Meanwhile, a little girl is dead and another cracker walks. :rolleyes2:

Other than that, I don't have much of an opinion on the whole thing. :wink2:

It helped that momma was a bad little party girl with big ta-ta's (oh yeah, right, you never noticed!!). Perfect tabloid fodder for the holier than thou crowd and all the horny dudes who just want to see a nasty beyotch in a prison jumpsuit.

You can't write this stuff. Well . . . OK, you can. It just doesn't run on any channels I subscribe to.
 
The Duke Lacrosse case and the Casey Anthony case both shared a rabid over-play in the media, with intense pressure in the public eye (to the elected DA's from the voters) to get blood... prosecute.. get a result.. get justice...

And when it gets down to the nut cutting, the case really wasn't there.

Its rare I agree with FC.... but in this case, I do.

I had never even heard of the case until it started showing up on the news channels that are often on in the pilot lounges of FBOs...

I think it was a situation where the state *knew* who did it, but lacked hard evidence and any indication that evidence would be forthcoming.

So they had two options:

1) Prosecute the case and hope for the best (e.g. Casey taking the stand and getting turned inside out.)

2) Walk away.

They chose option 1 and lost.

I would have thought it a bad decision if Casey had been found guilty. There just wasn't evidence to support that conclusion.

In addition, I think the state's case was damaged by the woman who impeached George Anthony - Casey's dad. The state had a "connect the dots" case with widely spaced dots. George's alleged lover pretty much discredited him, putting several of the state's "dots" in doubt and making it even harder for the jury to connect the dots beyond a reasonable doubt.
