Banning drivers who don't live in your city?

Ridiculing them for a terrible way of dealing with the problem is just as legitimate.
 
Last time I checked, “Where are you going?” was not a question anyone has to answer when asked by Law Enforcement.
 
Sure it does, but the solution then is to ban people from using public roads? The Jalopnik comments from the link I posted has some interesting comments on there, I was surprised at how civil and (relatively) informative it was/is

Town roads and main arterial bypass routes are built and maintained, and often funded quite differently from one another. Just consider the other angle, that’s all I’m saying. Discouraging is a better term than banning. ;)

Discouraging is a better term than banning
Discouraging I'd be fine with. Put some tolls on that main road everyone drives down in their town, and it may have been the more pragmatic solution. Kind of apples and oranges, but these folks in England saw a business opportunity and took it

I havent seen it mentioned here but it's my understanding that:

1. They are "closing" the roads during certain times of the day..."rush hours" (which are actually about 4 hours long)
2. Waze says they will respect this and not show those roads as alternate routes during "closed hours."
3. Google hasn't commented yet on whether or not they will still recommend the roads as alternatives.

They're not literally closing the roads, just "faking out" the traffic apps to avoid complete gridlock on their city streets caused by people who who should be on the freakin' freeways.

I personally don't see the issue and think it's a smart move.

Similarly, because of google, I've found a route from Ste. Genevieve, MO to Springfield, MO that's 15 minutes faster than any other "previously known normal" route available.

This route includes about 10 miles on Jones Creek Rd in Jefferson County. A rural, squirrelly, narrow, highly developed, residential country road that was definitely not designed to carry thru traffic. I can't imagine how pizzed off the folks who live on this road are at all the addl traffic it's carrying these days.

I certainly would be.
 
They need to use the Breezewood PA business model.

I am reminded of the company u-tube that tried to sue youtube and get them to change their name because all of the people looking for videos were overloading u tube's web server. They were sitting on an effing gold mine and were trying to shut it down.

They are effectively closing them if you don't live there. You need a sticker for your license plate and face a $200 fine if you pass through their town and get caught. Short of physically barricading it I don't know of any other way to close it

This isn't a quaint little rural town either, it's the result of what, presumably, was some kind of NIMBY zoning that forces I-95 to make this big loop around it. At one point there was talks of putting a freeway in to ease traffic, but again people freaked out so now they're stuck with the traffic

PS, instead of closing it and giving stickers to residents, why not issue "commuter stickers" for a monthly fee.. the public road stays open and the town makes extra revenue, while collectively easing the overall traffic load
 
My opinion is that if money outside of town money goes into any type of road maintenance, then this is unjust.

That said, I don't have business there, and doubt I ever will... So I'll sleep tonight, regardless.

BTW...with that said, there's a difference between me using the route and me bitching if the county decides to shut it down to thru traffic. I would completely understand if they did.

I think while they are at it they should shut down the ramps to get onto I-95 from the town too. It's only fair, why should the townsfolk enjoy the benefits of the interstate?

Furthermore, the towns surrounding this little bit o' paradise should close off the streets entering their towns as well. Win win!

Edit: And really if gas and other road taxes/funding were actually used for roads instead of diverted to pork the freeway system might even have the needed capacity. Nah, that's dreamin'.
 
By Odin I wish they would do that here. We get overrun by tourists and others who don't know where they're going and probably couldn't drive for merde even if they did.

The only things I think I'd ever have an interest in are Kelly's and the Bass islands, otherwise I don't really foresee a vacation to Ohio.

Ohio is great state, I've built projects all over it and have thoroughly enjoyed almost all of it. For the most part people take care of their chit in Ohio, you don't see trash strewn all over the countryside like you do in so many places. Pennsylvania people take care of their chit too.

Sounds like there may be an excellent black market opportunity for selling stickers. Haha.

We’ve been at war for decades. That we pretend we’re not and never declared any of them, is just political semantics. We blow up people regularly.

In general, residents, whether they live in a small town, a suburb, or a city, are not fond of an increase in traffic, even it brings in business.

And yet the culture is to congratulate other humans on their breeding prowess. LOL. Yay. You created a new human to clog up the roads in 16 years!

Heh. Or... city planners are just incredibly poor at laying out roads to match said breeding and human’s tendencies toward gathering around resources. Why not? They’ll just turn lanes into toll lanes and make more money when the traffic grows. No built in motivation to do it right, at all.

Here's a map of Leonia that probably makes the problem clearer. I think a better solution would be to barricade some of the streets so that it would not be a straight shot from one place to another. They could also reduce the speed limits. I believe Waze and other apps take that into consideration.

After looking at that map, I think I would cut through there too rather than taking 95 the long way around.
But if they put a bunch of traffic lights, all timed as badly as the ones around here, I might think again.
