I've had success with a battery too low to crank but not dead. Also, NAPA "aviation dept." has has a connector that is the same as the Piper plug but a fair amount less expensive.

A&P once told me that some battery power is needed to energize a relay that connects the external power jack, so a totally dead battery requires opening things up to get at the battery terminals. Learned the hard way (i.e., "experience.")
