Are there any Bo's left?

Still plenty.

Been a tough number of months for Bo drivers.

Appears this plane recently changed hands.

If you listen to the ATC recordings you will hear a lot of exchanges along with one very painful (final) comment.

Weather was reported 1,000OVC with tops about 3,500.

Very sad for those involved.

My guess: GA is waking up. Existing owners are bringing rusty skills into the air with a rusty airplane. Newbies like me are taking the low price of these amazing airplanes to step up to their first airplane (me) or something with more performance. Ditto with the rusty skills / airplanes.

Regardless of brand, get good maintenance and a good Cfi. Finding defects on my oldies hurt the wallet. CFIs finding defects in my skills is kinda fun! (Ever done a power on stall in a 35? How strong is that right leg?)

Having been there, the very next thread I see asking if one can get a fast airplane under $30k, I'll be askin: are you f'n nuts!

Ugh. That final 'comment' is horrifying. I wish I hadn't gone looking for it.

Low fuel probably didn't help. One of the Swiss cheese layers that lined up.

No kidding...I also went looking for it. I parked next to a Bonanza, think it was an A36 over the weekend, I forget the tail number, but hoping that's not the one involved. Saw a guy and gal pre-flighting it before I left.

That weather is what people call "soft IFR" great to practice in with good visibility underneath and on top. Very sad situation for all involved, but the weather seemed pretty benign for an IR pilot, but not goo for a VFR guy in a new airplane. :mad2:

Was the pilot VFR? It said the flight was on an IFR flight plan but of course that doesn't tell us much about the pilot's level of currency.

Given 'soft' IMC as you mention, the lack of fuel exhaustion (assumed from the "burst into flames" comments in the article, it's a head scratcher from what I've read (just the link in the OP).

I think he was IFR, it just doesn't make sense, it sounds like he lost his vacuum maybe, he wanted no gyro handling I think. Shouldn't have ended this way, but I guess most airplane accidents shouldn't' happen. :mad2::mad2:

ATC offered (more like insisted upon) no gyro guidance. Clearly the controlle rrecognized there was a problem. It was weird how the pilot had problems comprehending that he was to expect 5R. Then it all fell apart. Wonder what kind of nav equipment he had onboard, and what he was accustomed to using. Wrong nav freq in the box? No magenta line? Wrong magenta line? The controller gave him, IMHO, every opportunity to save the approach, most importantly offering a climb to VFR conditions.

ABQ Approach was making up for the losses tonight. Kept calling my Baron a Bo.

Mine's still kicking.

After my new motor I was getting called a Baron a few times (which made me smile).
