Anyone have old sectional charts sitting in a box somewhere? (especially 70s–2000s)

I've been collecting and scanning expired sectionals for a while and mapping all of them on archive.aero. But I can't find many from the 1970s through the 2000s.

Library of Congress luckily digitized the really old ones, and everything after about 2010 exists digitally direct from the FAA. So the charts a lot of us actually learned on are now the hardest ones to find.

If you've got a stack in a flight bag, a hangar, or a parent's garage, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing from you (reply or DM me). If you can't part with them, a high res flat scan is just as good. These are supposed to be thrown away but there's still stuff to learn from them!

Even a "my EAA chapter has a box of these somewhere" lead helps.

I am sure I have some, I will look.

But this is a fantastic website! I could literally spend hours on there, and the coverage you have is really pretty good considering. I, like you, have combed through the loc.gov website and while it's fascinating to find the old sectionals, the search tool is almost impossible to use.

Great job on the website, really, I'm very excited about it and have already bookmarked it. I will see what I have for sectionals in your requested date range and DM you (although this will cut into my "wrapping paper" collection :)).

Thank you! Feel free to share it with whomever you think would enjoy exploring! It’s about 3TB that I sliced and tiled down to about 200GB. I worked for about a year on it but it’s still not quite perfect how I want it. Please let me know what you dig up; I’d love to include it in the collection.

@RussR: Thanks for the help! Just responded.

@Schuy: Almost all of 1986 is missing, would love to get them in the collection! Can you DM or email me?

Just wanted to mention, if you're mailing charts to @Hemenway via USPS, do it "Media Mail". Maps explicitly qualify for the Media Mail rate, which is way, way cheaper than the other options. Now, you do need to physically take it to the counter in the post office and pay, but for the ~4 pounds of charts I'm going to mail today, it's about 5 or 6 dollars instead of a few times that by priority mail or flat rate envelopes or boxes.

It does take a couple more days to get there, but I don't think any of this needs to be rushed.

Great project! Checked out the website, it's pretty cool! I don't think I have any laying around, but I will ask around the EAA chapter and see if there's any.

Awesome! Somewhere, I have some 2000s sectionals, lots of Chicago and several Green Bay, with a set of most of the western US from 2008. If I can find them I'll certainly send them your way just to contribute to this project.

I'd also love it if you could archive any available IFR Low Enroute charts and approach plates. Heck, even High Enroute charts. I have all of my routes I've ever flown in my logbook, but as the VORs disappear, intersections disappear and/or get renamed, it's harder to recreate a route.

It'd also be really cool to be able to put these tiles into ForeFlight as a content pack with layers for various dates - Maybe each decade to keep it from getting too cluttered.

And while we're at it... Having the airports and navaids databases archived in such a way as to be able to see data for a specific airport for a specific date would be great too.

I must be getting old with my desire for all of this old data.

Somewhere I have a costco tote with header-clipped TAC/Sec/WAC for the whole US, probably a fair few pounds of them that I never got around to throwing out. Timeline would be circa 2008-2015.

Sort of surprise the LoC hasn't digitized these yet though. Have they suggested a reason for the gap in coverage?

2008-2015 has about 50% coverage so I'm sure a lot of those would fill some gaps! Can you DM me or email me and we can get them scanned and uploaded.

2008 is completely empty so I would love to get them included. Please DM or email me if you manage to find them!

I have a lot of future goals once the archive fills out better like your suggestion of approach plates is a big one for me as well as IFR but the data is even more scarce and less were produced. Maybe adding a layer to the map for known VORs dates and locations that you can watch disappear as you scrub through time? I also want to expand to maps for the rest of the world or other aeronautical data. Definitely want to expand the archive to whatever I can!

Very neat project. I've got a pile, but they're all from the early 1960s. 4 course radio ranges and all, which was pretty late in the game for them.

I'd post this project over on r/flying. Might get more traffic

yes, very nice project!!!

Sadly I'm a packrat who has been trying to recover, and I purged most of my old charts some time ago.... I would have had some of what you seek. oh well.

I'd imagine that you already have the digital versions of the few that I do have.
Jacksonville Sectional 95th edition 05 Feb 2015 - 20 Aug 2015
Jacksonville Sectional 71st Edition Feb 20, 2003
WAC CH-25, 32nd edition Dec 27, 2001
L-19/L-20 20 Mar 2003-15 May 2003
and I have a couple of old Terminal Procedures books from 15 May 2003 if you ever thought about cataloging procedures ;)

suggestion. When you scan paper charts, it might be interesting if you'd somehow be able to change the layers or something, so that each chart can be viewed individulay in place, complete with the margins and legends, as opposed to only the chart portions stitched continuously. I think the stitched version as it is, is the most interesting and useful, but I can imagine some reasons where it would be nice to be able to see the other stuff too. Is that data still in there, hidden?

Here's what I found in my bag:

Flight Case Planning Chart, 1 August 1985
VFR Terminal Area Chart, Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands, October-November 1983
Enroute Low Altitude, 10 May 1984, areas L19 and L20, which covers Georgia, most of Florida, and some of the Carolinas.
Jacksonville sectional, March 19, 1981
Atlanta sectional, October 2, 1980

this is a great idea and I agree 100%. I just pushed an update so when you click on the map you can show the contributing paper map overlayed solo. It's a good way for me to check my work as well!

Also your paper sectionals would be new additions so would love to get them scanned.

These would also all be new sectionals in the archive so would love to add them!

Is there a way to view just one Sectional at a time? I'd be curious to see the Legend on some of the older charts.

You can! First select the date, then click on the map, and then 'view alone'.

This is so bizarre! Just since last month I have been spending a lot of time searching for the same thing. I bought a bunch of charts from Ebay. Library of congress has charts prior to 1969, but it is missing a lot after that. Your site is fantastic. I would love to contribute.

Please send them my way! [email protected] or DM
