Android or IPad

To make it even more interesting, the latest Garmin Pilot Android release (out about a week now) adds a few more things (Glide Rings, Log book tracks, etc) so it is getting closer to the iOS version. I would try the iOS version on my daughter's iPad Mini to compare, but it is so slow now after that last iOS update that it is worthless if you ask me. I'll buy her a cheap i5 laptop before I buy her another iPad anything. I thought the first iPad's were awesome. But years later into this tablet stuff, I think the Android OS updates hurt less.

It was my understanding that you do not need to activate the Cellular service on the iPad to use it's GPS. It just needs to be a cellular version because only they have a GPS receiver.

But they don’t now. Numerous Android tablets have no GPS now in the never ending quest for cheapness. Watch specs carefully.

The GPS is actually part of the cellular chip. That's why it's only included on Cellular equipped tablets.
 
So, I just got an iPad.. there are so many accessories! I am not sure whether to get a yoke mount, or a window mount, a case with a cooling fan, a case that charges, a specific charger for the plane, and even what kind of foreflight to use. I will be renting for the foreseeable future..maybe a kneeboard instead of a yoke mount or a mount that sticks to the window?

Is there any place that breaks this stuff down, "Barnie Style" as we say in the services?

My Android (I use Avare on it) tablet has a GPS, but it's flaky down inside the cockpit, so I use a bluetooth GPS receiver with it. This works much better, and should work with any device without a built in GPS as long as the remote I/O is supported.

Isn’t it an amazing piece of technology? Stupid fast, amazing display, thin bezel and extremely thin and lightweight. One of their best efforts yet, aside from the iPhone X.

Yeah.. it is seriously impressive stuff. The display and responsiveness are unreal. I just need to actually buy foreflight, buy a case, buy a battery pack, buy a stratus.. it seems like the hunt for accessories never ends!
 
This will get lost in all the noise, but I'm an Android guy and I love iFlyGPS. It runs on everything--Android, iOS, Windows, and the dedicated iFly devices (which I started out with). Their dev team is very accessible and responsive to feature requests and UI suggestions. Their multi-platform data subscription is very reasonable. And I love the software.
 
I'm looking forward to learning about the new iPad Pro and Mini being announced on Tuesday. As a dedicated Android user, I hope the rumors of a USB-C connector are correct.
 
Well no Mini...yet. Hopefully we’ll see one next March but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

What does everyone think of the new iPad’s? Tempted to go hands on with the 12.9” and just how much smaller it is now but I still think it’ll be much too big for GA cockpits. The 11” is now 3 mm shorter but 4 mm wider which doesn’t help us much.

I also think Face ID could be an irritant in the cockpit.

50 hours a year, VFR only flying a few hundred miles away max, get a $200 Samsung tab A and a free subscription to Avare. It will do everything you need it to do.

I use a samsung tablet with Garmin Pilot. Just returned from 2 hours in IMC and approach to minimums. I don't have any issues with Android. I don't agree that it is good for VFR only. The Apple is not approved for IFR either. I do like the fact that they are cheaper, and if I lose it, its not going to hurt too much. Performance wise, I had it shut down once due to overheating when I left it on the dash in the hot sun.

I have tried various mounts and things, but always go back to just laying it on my lap. In 2011 my IPad was in a leather case and clinged to my pants legs quite well. My latest IPad is in a rubber case that people buy for kids. It is inexpensive and sticks to my pants like glue.

Using an IPad in a cockpit is all about keeping it out of the direct sunlight. If left in direct sunlight it can overheat and shut down. When I fly my 140 any distance I keep a chart at hand as backup. In the Mooney, the 430 is backup, but I carry a chart anyway. Even if it is out of date, it is better than nothing.
