Man yours took a while. Think they had mine done just over a month. Possibly IO-360s are an easier overhaul.:dunno:

My crank was rejected, it took us a while to find a good one. And, the folks who mill/bore/OH the cases were apparently backed up, they took about six weeks to turn the case around.
 
Is it a new thing to clad the cam in copper like that? I've seen it on bearings, to show when you've worn through the babbit. I've just never seen a copper coated cam shaft before.

Of course I haven't played with big bore's very much either.

Pretty cool! I know it's expensive as all getout, but it also looks like a ****-ton of fun!

Glad to see it going back together, Tim!

I'm looking forward to hearing about the end result. Be interesting to see how it all works.

3 months is about what it took for the 310's engines, including R&R. My local guy did R&R, Charlie did the engines. 425ish hours and 3 years later, the engines are still running beautifully.

Too bad you didn't go for the turbine upgrade though. Haha. Now that we'd all want to see!!

Copper plating is used in semi finished steel after initial machining to block the case hardening carbon addition during the subsequent carbonizing process.

The camshaft is probably made from SAE 8620 (or something similar) steel which can be carburized at high temperatures with a gas atmosphere up to about 1/16 inch deep It is a tough alloy, but needs to have added carbon (and heat treating) to make the cam lobes extra hard before final profile grinding. It is a very old process method to get the lobes file hard.

Awesome pics. I just learned a lot by staring at the pics. I never realized when you guys talked about case halves that there are no main bearing caps! The case IS the cap?! So is taking main bearing clearances as much of a pain as I am now guessing?

Nahhhhh, I'm grumpy all the time. :yes:

Actually, I have been flying. A DA-40. And while I am extremely grateful to have something to fly...what a disappointment it is. I can't wait to fly a real airplane again and one that I can actually sit in for over an hour without feeling like I've spent time on a torture rack. Maybe Diamonds fit people of a certain size and dimension but they certainly don't fit me! (6'-2", 205#)

Looking good, Tim. Subscribing for more pics, this stuff is fascinating to me. I just got my overhauled engine installed and will be doing the first flight by the end of the week hopefully. I didn't get any nifty pictures of my build, but I didn't ask for them.

Are you keeping the failed parts that aren't required for cores? I have box full of cool used parts. There are a few gears(countershaft, mags) that will make neat paperweights. I wanted a cylinder too but since I went with new Lycoming cylinders, they needed mine for cores.

Wait till you get the new engine back. You'll be happy! Gann has an excellent rep, you'll end up with a great engine:)

You do realize that cam/tappet failures are also a result of poor metallurgy....during the manufacturing process? :yes:

Indeed. I've been impressed with carlus' operation since day one.
 
Is this guy doing the jugs, valve and guide concentricity etc. as well, or are they coming from another shop?

I like the care and attentiveness to cleanliness. And the little fuzzy QC inspector.
 
What a great thread. I don't have any kind of mechanical background, so seeing these pictures and just imagining the process is really impressive. Pure wizardry to a guy like me.
