Amelia Earhart

It is the annual fund raising bull**** from TIGHAR.

If this were an actual identifiable part of an Electra I'd give it some credence.

Strike 1:

Most castaways have to improvise to collect their scrap bits of aluminum from the wreckage, but Amelia and Fred were lucky enough to have a drill and the correct bits to drill out all of the rivets.

Strike 2:

Is it a coincidence that Tighar "matched" the only piece of Amelia's plane that was an undocumented field modification and can't be verified by comparing it to Lockheed prints or another aircraft with that exact piece? The odds are staggering...

Strike 3:

Why isn't their "match" better documented? Maybe by making a tracing of the "mystery piece" on clear mylar and holding it over the area in question on the airplanes they examined? Maybe by providing a clear picture of each side of the artifact.

Here's a link to a thread on a warbird board. The metallurgy questions are pretty interesting. The thread starts months ago, but has been active in the last week or so leading up to Tighar's announcement...

TIGHAR has been suspect by WIXers for YEARS - literally. The real news story is that people still listen to them.

Now they have found a piece of the plane:
Learn to read internet with a bit more skepticism, specially if the 'revelation' comes with Ric Gillepsie. BTW, he is looking for more $$ to fund his next expedition, care to contribute??

Bah! Jerri Mock just passed away. Why they lavish all the attention on the one who crashed versus the one who not only made the flight but did it solo in a piston single is beyond me.

Why? Mock was a humble woman from Ohio who wanted to test herself. Earhart was an opportunistic media whore with a rich husband.

I don't get it either! Jerry mock, in a single engine 180 made Amelia look like a real klutz. Not only that but many of Amelia's contemporaries thought she was a lousy pilot. The current nut case, who flew with a safety pilot is a real ding bat. Mock is the one!

I wouldn't make a 'whore' out of her. Yes, she was lucky that she was surrounded by wealthy people, celebrities who promoted her, the First Lady was a big fan of her, she was the first woman to fly over Atlantic, she did have some other accomplishments, some races won and her contribution to popularizing aviation can't be disputed regardless of mistakes and/or less than perfect airmanship she showed in a few cases.

No......she was " surrounded" by one wealthy husband who also benefited from her attempted flight by being a book publisher! in case she made it, he would have recouped big bucks. She forgot her trailing antenna when she took off and had an alcoholic for a navigator. She had wrecked a couple of aircraft including the one she died in. There were strong rumors that she was gay and married him simply for some dough as she was low. Jerry mock lacked the publicity department Amelia had. Jerry mock was the real deal.

I was reading some of the link on the warbird site. I had no idea that so much recent research had been done into her disappearance.

Big maybe but even if true apparently he did not mind so this hardly makes her 'low'. He wouldn't be spending a small fortune looking for her if she were nothing more to him than a business deal.

Easy there. How's anyone supposed to know that history if the story is written by a credulous reporter parroting TIGHAR's press release. Parroting press releases would account for probably 90% of news stories.

I admit I got excited too until I realized this was not a report but a press release being passed on.

You're really ClimbnSink, right?

The thing that gets me is that this piece of metal was described as being placed where a window had been.

If so...why the rivet holes across the middle? Did they actually add structure inside the airframe to rivet the new piece to?

If there had been a window there, the adjacent structure should have been strong enough. All they *should* have had to do was rivet the paned around the exterior, where the original window pane had been attached. Why the rows of rivet holes across the middle?

When you have already decided on the answer and are hammer fitting evidence to match...

Sadly, I'll believe it when I see a tail number but I don't hold high hopes. We have trouble finding airliners yet.

Ahh but we found the little prince's bracelet, she may be found. Likely it will be by accident, not by tighar.

Kinda puts it in perspective. A modern airliner with a transmitting beacon can't be found. Makes you realize how big the ocean is.
